Agreed. My mentor uses Dunlop nylon heavy. In my hands they sound bad. Like a cheap nylon pick. With him they are perfect. He likes my BC, but is afraid of losing it. (FWIW, I am now trying Ultex .73 again and it seems to add the extra volume I need in this band.)

As to the Thile pick, interesting. It's basically the original Red Bear triangle. Might buy one to try it, but haven't really been serious about casein for a few years. It's another pick where I get more noise than sound.

Well, I just pulled the trigger and ordered one of these through Sweetwater... their site said "in stock" so I thought what the hell... give one a try.

Cheaper than a BlueChip or RedBear and 1.4 is the same thickness of the pick (a secret) I currently use so I'm curious to see what CT & DA got goin' on. I'll do a post after it arrives...

Seems like it's getting harder and harder these days to find facts and truths that are "real"... so when I was told by a rep at Sweetwater on Friday that yes, they did have the new D'Addario Chris Thile pick in stock and yes, they would have it shipped out to me on Monday (today) I was excited about my purchase and looked forward to receiving it. But when I called them today to confirm that they were shipping it out the sales rep I spoke to gave me some lame excuse that they were "changing their shipping warehouse" or some such B.S. and that the shipping would be delayed for an undetermined amount of time.

So here's an actual "fact" and the real "truth"... the didn't have the pick in stock. In fact nobody does! You can order one of these picks from a few retailers, but the truth is that they are not yet available.

As someone who once ran an art dealership selling pieces of art worth tens of thousand of dollars I figured out very early on that the way to succeed in business was to 1. Always treat your customers like gold and 2. Deliver on your promises.

I won't be doing any more business with Sweetwater. The water was not sweet and their brand of customer service has left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. "Nuff said...

Well I got an email this morning from Sweetwater stating that the Chris Thile Sig Casein 1.4mm Mando Pick was shipped on Saturday to me. Guess I'll know in a few of days.

Got mine in the mail Saturday from American Musical Supply. It was glassy smooth out of the package, but becomes a bit textured with some hand warmth. The tone is brighter than my normal Wegen. I like it better than the Red Bears I’ve used, marginally better than my primetone, and equal but different to the Wegen. Honestly, about like I expected — but still a great gift from my wife!

Side note: it’s a good pick for getting clarity on my oval-hole mandola. I do prefer it there to the Wegen.

Haven't had a casein pick since the Compton Taterbug model from Red Bear. Can't find that one anywhere.

Eric at EML picks makes a really nice casein pick if anyone is interested. I also like his resin picks (I actually like them better than casein).

I received mine from Sweetwater ordered Thursday the 20th arrived Priority Mail on Monday the 24th - great service as always from Sweetwater ;-)

As for the "new" Thile pick I've only had about 5-10 minutes of A/B time w/the D'Addario vs. the BlueChip - and Drew who posted prior nailed it comes out of the gate glass like a red bear but quickly tacks up a bit....its a nice pick for sure!

Maybe I'm nuts but it still doesn't "quite" have the clarity that the CT55 has....is it within $10 of that, well you be the judge ;-) I'm glad I got it for sure, its a nice back up to the CT55 and should this ever change I'll update my post/comments.

But since March 2011 the CT55 has been the pick under the strings ....

Sweetwater is a 1st Class Act! They wound up sending me a new DA Thile pick and didn't charge me a thing. How "Sweet" is that?!?

That kind of customer gesture is almost unheard of in this day and age... my hat is off to them... thank-you Sweetwater!

I wasn't gonna get in a spittin' contest when the first comments were made about Sweetwater but... I have to say that I've never had anything but good service from them. My band and I have spent hundreds of dollars there because their prices are competitive, items are shipped super fast and customer relations are as good as anyone in the business.

Mine arrived from Sweetwater today. First impression is quite favorable. Nice feel and good tone especially on the E strings where it doesn't add the high end hash that the BC picks seem to do for me. I'll give it a good tryout through the weekend and see if I keep using it.

I may as well put in a word for my 2013 interview with Thile for the Cafe. Like the big gear nerds we are, we got distracted by talk of picks and strings. And I never was able to schedule part II of my interview to discuss interpretation and recording! Then we both got busy and distracted. It's on my 'someday' list to pull him aside and update and complete what I meant to be a two part interview/story.

I was just given (unexpectedly) one of the D'Addario Chris Thile picks for my anniversary from my wife (ain't she sweet!). My first impressions are like the statements written before mine, glassy feeling right away but warms and feels very good after a bit. I don't have any other experience with Casein and am wondering if this is normal??? I like the sound I get when I played my Weber with this pick. It's a bit brighter than the Wegan but not too bright and glides smoothly across the strings. The shape very much reminds me of my CT55.... the tone as well.

They look like a clone of the CT-55 expressed in casein instead of the BC material.

The shape is VERY close if not exactly like the ct55. The Daddario does feel thicker at 1.4mm. I cant remember what the 55 means in BC thickness???

It seems that a large triangle pick can be had for a lot less than $25 and the difference in plectral tonality is not really worth the drastic difference in price.
