Default Ideas for a Hymn Project

    Hi Friends,

I have a small hobby recording studio set up in my basement and would like to record a collection of traditional hymns. I'll play mandolin and guitar and probably ask some friends to help on bass, fiddle, etc.

    Question:

What are your favorite hymns that are in the public domain?

To get things started, I'm thinking about recording "Sweet Hour of Prayer," "Poor Wayfaring Stranger," "Just a Closer Walk," etc.

    What others should I include?

    Thanks!

Have a listen to Brad Paisley’s version of What A Friend We Have In Jesus. Amazing guitar playing.

We're doing Be Thou My Vision, Come Thou Fount, and Come, thou Long-Expected Jesus as a medley because they all have a similar Celtic feeling.

Softly and Tenderly can be done beautifully. Heaven's Jubilee, while perhaps not as well known, gives you a chance to speed it up a little if you want.

My faves are I'll Fly Away and I am Weary Let Me Rest, but I have no idea if they are public domain or not. Oh, and Angel Band.

    From Wikipedia:

"I'll Fly Away" was sampled without permission for the Grammy-winning song "I'll Be Missing You" recorded in 1997 by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans. In 2000, the songwriter's heirs, Albert E. Brumley & Sons, Inc. settled a copyright infringement suit filed against Arista Records, Faith Evans, Illegal Songs Inc., Chyna Baby Music, Janice Combs Publishing Inc., Magnetic Publishing Ltd. and Bad Boy Entertainment. In the settlement, the defendants acknowledged that Albert E. Brumley & Sons were the rightful copyright owners of "I'll Fly Away" and compensated them for an undisclosed amount.
Brumley died in 1977, and his heirs will hold copyright until 2047 if my understanding of the applicable rules is correct.

I worked out a ragtime version of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms if you're interested.

There is a good Utah band called Lower Lights. They consider themselves a "hymnal revival" group and play lots of great stuff you might get some good ideas from. You can check them out on youtube.

Here is a good rendition by them of Jesus Savior Pilot Me:

I am interested. I love to play ragtime tunes.

I tried to send you a private message, but unfortunately you have exceeded your storage space maximum.
