I've never owned a mandolin with a stamped tailpiece before like is on my A-1. The covers slide backward off the tailpiece don't they? No pivoting at all?

The covers usually slide downwards (if you think of the head as north, they slide south). No, they don't usually pivot. They can be very stiff on a new mandolin. When you do get it off, rub a bit of candle wax on the flanges and it will come off easier next time.

There are no dumb questions, Brick. That's what the forum's for.
I have a video on Youtube that shows how to remove it. I just can't get there from here.

I won't show the other one, with the nine-pound sledge hammer and the propane torch. It's just too scary.
