After analysis paralysis and an exhaustive hunt, I finally found a fantastic Collings MT2-V with torrefied Adirondack top. I have to say this is one of the finest mandolins I've had the pleasure to own and play. I don't think I've ever had a mandolin that was as responsive and easy to play as this one. This is my first Collings and I'm really impressed. Fit and finish are what everyone has already stated about Collings, so it's redundant for me to say it's flawless. The old-style Collings built case is a marvel to behold as well. Perfect match.
I've had the MT2-V about 2 weeks now and strung it with Martin Monel mandolin strings about a week ago. I've attached an MP3. I don't know if this gives you any indication of the tone because I just used my Macbook built in microphone, but if you can suffer through my playing, hopefully it'll give you an idea of tone.
I also want to give a shout out to Steve at Down Home Guitars in Frankfort, IL. He shipped the mandolin to me well packaged and answered all my questions. A fine buying experience and he's a great guy to deal with.
