Thread: Mandolin-related multitool?

  1. #1

    Default Mandolin-related multitool?

After coming back from a trip on the school holidays, I was instantly assigned to a random group in my product design class.
We are meant to design and make a bunch of different variations on one product. Our theme is multitools.
After struggling to come up with concepts that relate to my hobbies, I figured I could try to design one to do with Mandolins? Maybe to help with restringing or cleaning?

I'm not trying to get you to do the project for me :P I just need some advice from people who know their stuff on what I could include on the tool.

(this might be a dumb idea, if you think so just tell me, better now than later haha)

String winder that fits mandolin tuner spacing. Wire cutter for string changes. If u want to go nutz, get feeler gauges and a fret crowning tool along with nut files that will fit EJ75 sized strings (can be adapted
To EJ74 gauged strings)...I’d buy that tool in a heartbeat...

A small pick case might be part of it. Small screwdrivers (one flat and one Phillips). The wire cutter could also be needle nose pliers.

String winder for sure, then allen wrench for truss rod, wire cutter, screwdrivers for tuner buttons, and a bottle opener.

Why not build a pick holder into it? Some way to slide three or four picks in for storage.

It's gotta have a nice little file so you can quickly reshape the bevel on a new dunlop after your bluechip flies down the heating vent.

Strings and Beyond do a guitar mulitool that has a screwdriver, pliers, wire cutter.... thing to lift the pegs out of the bridge... (you might want to google it https://www.stringsandbeyond.com/pw-...ulti-tool.html - I did it for you... )

I'd add a ruler, to measure action, etc...

A fine file? For nuts? (that may not be practical)

I have a nail cutter, nail file, beer opener combo that is great...though if it wound strings and cut strings it'd be completely awesome.

Calculating the weight of a multitool which incorporates all of the above suggestions is around six pounds two ounces, so why not add a small flask for use at festivals.

I’d like to see a timing corrector, and a tuning enhancer plus error correction.

All the above, winder, scissors with string cutter notch, blade, file, fine screw driver for peg buttons....flat and phillips, bottlepener, led flashlight, hole punch/awl for straps...
    Sounding very SAK....

And.... a large, padded , lightly sprung or screw tension plier like device to hold strings againt fingerboard while changing strings???might be too large.....

Heres a twist for you....design the handle of the winder as the body for the tools...ie a fairly large pocket knife, with the peg crank extending, obviously with the 90 degree extention pivot ....

Poor Jasper - he was looking for honest help, and we have (in good fun) turned his thread into a running gag.

    Sorry buddy.

    My REAL answer:
    - Mandolin size string winder.
    - Phillips & flat head screw driver
    - String cutter
    - Needle-nose pliers.

    I want a knife blade.

    Wire cutters
    String winder
    Small stepped feeler gauge
A ruler with as much on it as possible. Inches, thousands, 64ths, metric.
Bottle opener - very important! I am not a big fan of canned beer.
I do like the idea of nut files. Two dual sided files.
    Detachable 4 sided fret rocker.
Flathead screwdriver on the end of one of the tools.
    Phillips

Although a truss rod wrench would be great, you would need several variations.

I would settle for a Leatherman that has a mando sized string winder.

This from my knife collection, for inspiration. Full size fork & spoon make this one of my favorite multi-tools.

I just realized that my Leatherman 300 doesn't have a cork screw. (nor a fork and spoon). So I could weld that to my Swiss army knife and a Snark, but I don't think the clamp on the Snark could handle all that and stay on the headstock. And it wouldn't fit in my case so I'd have to get a man-bag.

Not sure if there's an unofficial 'right' way to do this, but thanks to everyone for the great ideas! There were so many things I hadn't thought of, and some tools I hadn't ever heard of. I'll post the end result somewhere once it's finished
