    Default Strings for MB-Jr?

    Hi,

I bought a 1925 Mandolin Banjo Jr. a few years ago and never did much with it. Now I'm learning some Charlie McCoy tunes and the MB Jr has suddenly elbowed its way to the front of the class. It probably needs a set up and new strings. Does anyone know what is the best gauge strings for an MB?

    Thanks very much.

I always put banjo strings on a mandolin banjo, it is a banjo in the end. I use two sets of tenor banjo strings. You don't need heavy strings on a banjo and it will sound better with lighter strings. It will also play better and last longer.

You may want a bit bigger G&D string than tenor banjos, for the short scale.
    then look for nickel wound..

    XLite 9, 13 wound 20, 32? or Lite, 10, 14, W24, 36..

The tenor strings I am using are 20w and 28w and they seem to work fine. I wouldn't go above a 32, a five string banjo has good depth and is nowhere near a 32.
