Every day mark Agnesi posts the guitar of the day based on stock from Norman’s rare guitars. If you’re into guitars, it’s a lovely video. He usually talks about the guitar (lots of fenders and Gibson’s, martins and then some lesser brands - gretsch danelectro.)

Today he plays an April 12 1923 loar.

It's #72859, beautiful mandolin; David Grisman and Kenny Snow were former owners. Two weeks ago, I talked to another former owner of that F5 (from the UK), who said he was never fond of the sound, could never break it in and glad he could eventually sell it - just his opinion. Sounds nice and bright to me.

I wondered if someone who knew the owner would show up. I thought it had a lovely tone and that mark did a decent job in playing the mando equivalents of ‘smoke On the water’ and ‘stairway to heaven’ I also appreciate that he kept it simple.
Having said that I can sort of see why your owner didn’t quite gel with it.

Tuned and played I think it would be a good one, It does have a brightness to it that I like, I do not like a mellow or bass type mandolin, I like shrieking treble and brightness, I would be happy with it if the neck wasn't a hard V, most 23's are, I'm more of a fan of the early feb 18th 24 batch mainly because of my experience with the first known # of that batch. But I sure haven't played enough of them!!!

+1....He was a bit over the top as well IMHO and his info on dates and Lloyd Loar was off; he could have consulted the Siminoff site...YMMV

BTW that F5 has been in their store for a couple of years now...6 minutes into that video and I was done, being a SoCal guy, he was typical LA...

I think it is. I can't find it on the website - whether it's not on the website, or whether it sold already, I can't tell you. Is the market for Loars brisk? (Given their rather large price point, how many mando players have that kind of money. Having said that, Loars are in demand?

Apologies for a rant here, but as someone who "comes from" both Southern California and Appalachia, I can say- What a thoroughly tiresome affect. And I feel even less informed than when I began.

I do occasionally check out these posts on instagram and can hardly make it through when they're 20 sec. long... One thing I can say about this guy is that he does "know all the chords". One can see him cop just about every classic guitar riff known, on the appropriate featured guitar. Never been to Norm's, but I'd be surprised if he's got more mandos in stock than I played at McCabe's...

Those videos just show that it is the player that determines the sound of a Loar and not just the mandolin itself. neither one of them sounded all that great to me.....I wonder how much money it takes to own a store like that, they seem to only deal in rare instruments....Their insurance bill must be sky high....

Yes, that video is the same one Paul ViaPiano plays in the second clip. it is still listed for sale. Paul in the comments section of the second YT video comments that it needed new strings and had not been played in a while. And that was 2 years ago. It is listed for sale on Reverb

That was a fun watch, but there was something strangely sacrelidge about playing Loosing my Religion on a LL signed F5... I felt this weird inner voice saying "oh don't do that"... not that I dislike REM or anything; it just seems like the instrument deserves more ...or is that a "mandolin-snob" kinda thing to say? ... thoughts?

I kept fast-forwarding, a little bit at a time, got up to 7 minutes

I did enjoy it. I like to see any pictures/videos of those beautiful old F5s. Thanks for posting.

The secret to enjoying the video, for me anyway is to skip ahead to the 2:10 mark where the mandolin finally makes its appearance.
And don't forget to turn the sound all the way down.
