    Fear not, Pete.
It's hard to play mandolin wearing a pocket protector... (Not that *I've* ever tried...)

Is that just because it's a banjo or because it's a lefty?

I find this thread interesting because a month ago I bought a house of exactly that style and plan. The style is called "Carpenter Gothic" and its construction dates roughly 1860. Mine is a bit different in exterior details but follows the plan and general appearance exactly. The plan of these houses is a cross, if you visualize a cross laying flat with the base to the left.

Anyway, interesting photos of an interesting painting of an interesting house. If I get a chance I will photograph myself and wife with mandolins in the above pose in front of our new house.

Cool. That layout is called "Cruciform".. usually the floor plan of cathedrals. Interesting opportunity for me to tie together my background studying medieval church architecture with mandolins and photoshop ninny-ness

Dan: Yes, it is a perfect cross plan. Also notice the pitch of the roof... very steep (Gothic in feeling) and the vertical thrust of the board and batten siding. The interesting thing Ive found is that the plan is strikingly modern in that all rooms have windows on two sides and the living room and two other first floor rooms have windows on 3 sides. The house is surprisingly modern in feeling for indoor/outdoor living. Very light and airy. Most likely expensive to heat. It is not ornate like later Victorian and I find the simplicity very interesting. The widest floorboard I have found in the house is 16+" in width. The lumber was harvested and milled locally and hand hewn for the large beams.

Lest we forget this is a mandolin site I might add that the floorboards would make a whole lot of really nice mandolins.

    Hey Bart,
If you are ever in the midwest, you can get a picture of yourself infront of the actual house in the painting. #Its located in Eldon, Iowa and still looks like it does in the painting. #I live about 15 or 20 miles away from it and stop by once or twice a year.
The community of Eldon is working very hard to build a visitors center nearby to have information and tourist stuff available to the public.

Tedthro, you missed the point. She's keeping her mouth shut to keep from laughing at his idea about using old strings for a hair piece...

To correct my comments a few messages above: Although the house is "Carpenter Gothic" in style, Its plan does not form a cross. It is a simplified, smaller version of a Carpenter Gothic house. I misinterpreted the house image in the painting.

    Sorry about that...

Curious's version was such an inspirational addition, I couldn't help myself. Before Goth was Goth … call this one "American Grotesque."

Sure could've found a more productive way to spend my morning.

How about a Dawg Gothic? American Dawg? Maybe a Dawg relative?
Gotta put black electrical tape over Gibson.
Nope, nope, to be authentic, you gotta scratch out the 'Gibson' with your Barlow knife. Getting t.o.ed at Gibby first helps!

Django is close enough for any forum! #Anyone who can play like that with only 2 good fingers and a thumb is okay in my book.
