Default this is great, 1 hour+ concert with Reischman, Gilchrist, Nygaard

once again, this may have made its rounds here, new to me, and it has a lot of joking around between songs, some nice upclose hand work from masters of the mandolin, Reischman playing a mandola(I think) and Sharon G fingerpicking her mandolin(around 1 hour mark).

A great concert. I smiled thru the whole thing.

A lot of John R arrangements btw.

Nice! The mandolin close ups are great.

I just found this video as well and I've watched it a few times. I hope they have plans for another album together!

I really like John's right hand technique. Well, I like a lot more than that, but that right hand just cries out to be studied.

    Great video, enjoyed watching it.

Hank, to me his right wrist is bent down instead of staying straight as it would be naturally. Keeping the wrist straight and twisting the forearm would be more efficient. Not that John doesn't do a great job playing. It's another example of a different technique that works for the player.

It is really interesting to compare and contrast between Sharon and John. I really like the fluid, apparantly tension-free, motion that John uses. Looks SOOOOO easy. Why can't I do that?

But I would love to be able to play like Sharon, too. Oh well. So much to learn and so little time left.

John has mentioned this in a past video. He has a hyper-extended thumb (think that's what he called it) and his pick rotates in the opposite direction of most players. So instead of the lead edge of the pick angling down towards the bottom of the mandolin, his angles up towards the top. He has always played that way.

Well, I don't plan on any hyperextensions. Prolly the only thing holding me back.

A friend of mine plays with his pick that way. He is left handed so he can use a right handed pick with a speed bevel. In that case John would have to use a left handed pick. A good lesson in overcoming obstacles.
