Such a nice backing track!
I heard a few minutes of an interview (jazz station on car satellite radio) of two jazz players talking about phrasing. One of the players was talking about solos and said he learned a ballad from the playing of a hot jazz name, recorded it, then when he heard the vocal version, was unhappy with his solo because the slow tune need a solo to complement the slow tempo and emotion of the tune. That's about when I had to turn it off and go into my appointment.
I think he was talking about taste and how to develop it by listening to the phrasing and even breathing of a vocalist like Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald. This month, I hope to try and develop some taste on this nice ballad. I have sometimes thought that slow songs were harder to play right than fast ones...
Pete, thanks again for being the impetus on this series.

I did a quick take last night! It's a bit of a strange approach. What a beautiful song though.
Also sorry I missed last month!
I always like your unusual approach! cool, thanks
I love this tune. Here is my submission. Happy Spring!
Thanks, Larry
Here is mine. Sorry for the rather poor recording quality, didn't have time to set up my studio today.

Having fallen behind on my clarinet practice and being caught unawares a few times, I recently hit on an exercise for visiting all the keys: I play Body and Soul a couple times in Db, then again in E, and all the way around to Db. This tune has the 3 key centers, but also some interval jumps in the melody that keep me on my toes. I love the way this process illuminates the relationships in the tune. Gotta practice, anything to keep me interested!
Another (terrific resource by the way) is to explore Pete Martin's offerings at http://www.petimarpress.com/books.html . Pete is often on the Jazz Forum here in the cafe and there are a load of his videos on YouTube. If you go to the website listed here and scroll down to the bottom of the listings, he is offering a book labeled 'Chord Melody and Drop 2 Chords for Mandolin'. Definitely worth getting, paying the nominal amount and spending some time with.
For those of us afflicted with the C tuning malaise ... this is written for a five string mandolin so, no problem in transposing, just ignore that pesky E string and rock on.
Thanks Pete for another timely and pertinent offering.
Mandola fever is permanent.
Here's my attempt :-
