    Default Ballpark for a Dudenbostel

    Greetings,

There are not many Dudenbostels on the market which really says something. People are not letting them go... I am currently searching for a new mando and Dudes are always on my radar but they are just so hard to find. I specifically want an A5 or a 1A model with either a carpathian spruce top or engelmann top. The question I do have is, what should I expect one of these to go for price wise. What is a ball park figure for a top of the line Dude A-5 these days? In a private sale setting as well as a retail setting these days.
I know the 1A's are around $7-$8k according to the most recent examples that were offered at Carters. Thanks so much in advance!

    D
P.S. Im intrigued by the following but there are not a lot of these out there
    Dude A5 or 1A
    Apitius F
    Duff A5
Wiens A5 (He has not made an A5 yet but man I bet he could)...
    Gilchrist A5 Jr
    Heiden Heritage A5

    New or used?

The Heiden is going to be the same price new or used, or at least close because you see so few. Plan on spending $8k plus on that.

The same goes for the Gil A jr. (I assume you are looking for an f-hole model).

A used Dude A5 is going to be right in the ballpark of the one at Schoenbergs. Figure $12k.

You can get a used Apitius F5 for $5k to $6k.

That and the Duff A5s (which are pretty scarce) are your best bet (I've seen these used for around $4500)

What's interesting is no mention of Nugget here at all.

I'm under the impression that Michael Heiden only made 15 Heritage model mandolins, 13 being F5's and 2 being A5's. As such, I don't believe the $8K figure presented above is entirely accurate, at least not for the Heritage model.

    But I've been wrong before....LOL.

Thanks for chiming in and you've also just reminded me that I'd be very open to a Red Diamond mandolin...

Paul told me he's only built about 20 or so A5's.

My Duff A5 is pretty much the only mandolin I need.

The body on Paul's A's are more akin to the shape of an oval hole Gibson, think Loar A5.

For the price they're hard to beat, and you get a nice Presto fiberglass case as well.

You can get a new Duff A5 for 5k. Mine was built in 2017 and it is Adi and Birdseye and it is killer. When I got it it didn't take me long to choose to sell my Ellis F5. YMMV. Not sure how often he builds mandolins that are not Adi. You ay need to make a custom order. His mandolins are killer right now, though. I noticed Forrest O'Connor playing what looked to be a new Duff in his Mandolin Mondays and he has owned a bunch of killer mandolins. If it is going to cost you $4500 for a used one you may as well get a new one and get it to your specs.

I played a Duff Scout about 6 months ago that may be the only one he’s made (F5 styling, but only top bound). Didn’t feel I was worth the 6K price tag, but am kicking myself for not buying it. It didn’t last long...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Mike K no longer will make his A Junior model.

If you owned a ballpark, you could sell it and buy a Dudenbostel.

Any of those mandolins you listed would be a great companion to the Gilchrist you got last year. I would lean in the Apitius and Heiden direction if it were my money I was spending. Good luck on the hunt!

NFI, but I know that Carter Vintage will be receiving a new Duff A5 in a few weeks. I would get after it as they only get one or maybe 2 a year...

    What Adam said.

I´d be interested in a comparison between a Duff A-5 and a Hester A-5... Anyone able to give insight?

I would think that anA-5 by Gilchrist, Dudenbostel, Heiden, Nugget is probably about 13 k.

I think that the tonal differences are interesting to think about.

He’s still making A style mandolins, or at least he was a while back. Aside from that there are used Nugget A models that come up from time to time.

You know who you never hear mentioned? Stan Miller.
