Sound Devices is a leader among pro-gear. And even if that price seems high for a digital notepad, it's a bargain for a pro-level multitrack field recorder.

What's your recording chain for your video productions? They have a MixPre-3 and 6 too. Apparently, you'll be able to buy a plug-in that will give you the overdub and other features the 10M has.

Very nice indeed. SD gear is superb. One thing that I wish they would have included is start/stop triggering and timecode logging via HDMI... as increasingly many cameras employ this method (including the Panasonic GH-4 and GH-5 I use myself). The Mixpre 3 and 6 do have this feature.

They dropped the timecode and price on this one from their MixPre-10T. Most of their recorders are aimed at sound for video/film. This is completely aimed at musicians.

What's your recording chain for your video productions?

I use the Tascam 70d for many of my live performance video productions. And insanely good deal with 4 decent mic pres for $300. But I have other methods if I need more tracks or better pres.

The Tascam 70D is excellent.... astounding value and works really well.

I was using the Tascam DR60D for a while, also a very decent little box of tricks. I found myself needing TC more and more, though, for various jobs so I got in a Zoom F4, F8 and Sound Devices Mixpre 6 to play with and compare. For a range of reasons (including very good dual SD card capability, full internal TC, and balanced outs - among others) I ended up keeping the Zoom F4. A very well made. solid and great sounding recorder. I did like the SD display, but it had a few too many compromises in other areas. It handles mid-side nicely, the preamps are incredibly quiet and clean, and it has enough tracks (6 in total) for most of my needs. If I need more I just hitch up an external drive to my Touchmix 16.... very happy with the F4. Super compact, good battery life, and very versatile. All of these recorders are fantastic these days. I remember hauling UHER and Nagra tape machines around, with lead-acid battery packs!!! I would never do any mixing or editing on any of these recorders.... just use for capture and edit in a DAW or Final Cut Pro X.
