Default PLEASE READ: Server Issues ongoing

As most of you know, we had a serious hardware issue with the server last night around 7:40 p.m. that wasn't discovered for an hour because, well, we have other things like families, other interests, etc.

The issue has been identified and we made the decision to use the weekend to move to a new box with a bigger engine, bigger pipe, more squirrels and chickens to power it. Some of the time it is taking is due to the lag in response from our provider, and partly that Dan B. who is the sysadmin is 7 time zones away--that this server is even running and pages being visible is a testament to his incredible skills. No, we don't have a bank of administrators and programmers at our command 24/7.

There will likely be a bit of down time again at some point once we get all the quotes, etc. Looking like tomorrow, but could be Sunday. Using this thread as the main discussion and communication point. We *think* we'll be stable until upgrade but anything can happen. Please, if you're composing a long post, consider copying it to a text file or your clipboard for safe keeping until we give you the green light.

Everything else like mail, classifieds, PMs, ad replies appears to be functioning normally.

Nothing more to add, and please allow us to use this thread only for communicating with you. If you need to ask questions or make contents, please do so through PM to the Mandolin Cafe account.

Dan is planning to install our new server today as soon as we can get all the administrative details with our hosting company worked out. There'll not be a lot of notice so at some point today--at the time of posting this I can't accurately predict when that will be--we may incur some downtime but I can't accurately predict how much. Might be minimal.

Just keeping you updated at 8:10 a.m. this Saturday.

Update, we're looking at tomorrow now. We know there are some errors getting kicked up on the Forum but that's part of why we have to do this. Some set-up work done today, rest we hope tomorrow.

Well, last weekend we had a bit of down time was related to a hardware failure that resulted in us having to migrate everything to a new server. In case you haven't noticed, our downtime the past 6-8 years has been untouchable, as in almost zero.

Last night about 8:00 p.m. our host decommissioned the old server as is part of any such matter. They made a huge mistake in doing so. Without going into technical details, they did the musician's equivalent of taking all of the wheels off the band bus and moving into an empty field out in the country. It'd still start, but there was no road and no tires. Oops. I get the occasional hardware failure, but the last 11 hours of downtime should never have occurred. Hesitated to post anything but there's the answer for anyone that wondered.

And yet, look at that. The sun still came up. I know because I was up most of the night and watched it all happen.
