"Underappreciated" perhaps, rather than "underrated" for nearly everyone named here.
Frank Wakefield, three more times.
Jack Tottle.
Cornelius Morris
Has anyone mentioned Dick Smith? Mandolin and banjo virtuoso.
Amazingly enough, I rarely hear about Marty Stuart. Marty absolutely smokes on the mandolin, not a lot of pickers can say they are better players.
Excellent thread. I always enjoy being reminded of all the great, unsung players out there. I'll add a few of my personal favorites for inclusion here, whom I do not think have been mentioned yet:
- Sharon Gilchrist
- Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies)
- David Long
- Tim O'Brien
- Don Julin
- Peter Ostroushko
- Rich DelGrosso
- Andrew Hendryx

The whole Geiger project is great.
That Radim Zinkle (sp) fella.
Because mine has eight, does that make it twice as cool as a ukulele?
Agreed
I would say that most of us who are here on the Mandolin Cafe are underrated players.
Scott devoted a thread yesterday to a little known player going by the name of Mandolin Jerry. I have never heard anyone more deserving of being underrated.

Amazingly enough, I rarely hear about Marty Stuart. Marty absolutely smokes on the mandolin, not a lot of pickers can say they are better players.I attended a local one time festival in 1980 where I went to hear Doc Watson, among others. Little did I know that I got to see a historical moment that night because it was the last time an obscure mandolinist and fiddler played with Doc before he went on to fame and fortune as Marty Stuart. I found this out a couple of years ago.I new who Marty Stuart was before I knew what a mandolin was.
Eva Holbrook . . . .
I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...
Yeah, maybe this isn't as much about underrated as it is players who just aren't often mentioned on the Cafe -- for whatever reasons. And I'll concur with Marty Stuart. He's as good as they get, though not often mentioned around here it seems. And nobody puts on a better concert than his Fabulous Superlatives.
Great thread I’ll add Doyle Lawson, Rhonda Vincent, Wayne Benson

To be underrated, I think you have to first be somewhat known, otherwise my 15 yr old nephew could be considered underrated. So underrated to me, means names we know, but not mentioned often in the course of polite mando talk.
To me, that fella is John Duffy. We all know the name, but I see very few references to his playing here at the Cafe. One of the most interesting soloists ever on mando.

I'm horribly biased, but I do love The Pogues and consider Terry Woods (ex-Steeleye Span) joining the band just before their breakthrough If I Should Fall Grace with God album to be a significant contribution to their success. Woods was a really welcome addition to the band with his knowledge, skill and excellent musicianship.
Although he plays cittern, mandola, banjo, bouzouki and concertina, he is less well known for being a fine mandolin player.
