I have a friend that specializes in obscure music composition. He would GEEK OUT over this kind of music. I don’t understand it so well, nor have a real affection for it, but know that it IS real.
Kudos to the composor for putting out into the world.

If you havn't already, sample the last track, Mandolin Snowstorm. I am tempted to buy it just to see what the other parts of the ensemble sound like.

Of all the cuts, I have to say that "Jerry Mandolin is not my Real Name" is my favorite. It has that flavor of you alienation mixed with anger and yet makes a true political statement in this globally shrinking world. Jerry Mandolin is the harbinger of all things Mandolin, melding the past with the present and forgoing the future. Thank you!

Actually, I am certain that is is one of us. Or maybe one of them.

    Aha!!
Cactus Breakfast Records is a netlabel dedicated to jettisoning as much oddity into the musicosphere as humanly possible.

It would be better if he had taken more inspiration from John Cage.

Our US based friends may never have heard of the (in)famous UK orchestra; the "Portsmouth Sinfonia" - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nDZZEfrRbdw

I've come around on this. The fact that tis is actually available on Amazon is fantastic. Why, 50 years ago we had to go into studio, record, press 45's, pay some dj to get them on the air, talk the local stores into selling some for us, and only then sit back and be the subject of ridicule. No we can go straight to the ridicule. This is the bomb.

Ummm, do you think that maybe Volume 2 could benefit from, say, Rob's set up guide?

Love it! Seriously! I can hear the oriental influence along with some Jewish thrown in for the spiritualistic minded. The muted string clicks are actually morse code for "Send help PDQ" "We are going down by the head"

By the fourth sample, I was laughing so hard that I almost spilled my coffee!

It can be interesting, seeing what people are experimenting with.

I pretty much agree with that sentiment, now that I've had a chance to think about it some more. Even if it was just a prank on all of us internet types, it's still a clever use of sound.

It's not my preference as to music, but I'm not particularly perturbed that someone is making those kinds of sounds. I doubt I could do it, but of course I'd have to want to first, so there's that.

This style of sound reminds me of standard poetry (most of which is also not my cup of tea), but seems like both share the idea of using other means to describe common real-life things.

Of the samples posted, the "Arctic Thaw" sample was interesting - I can see it as a musical description of heavy snow melting off a roof and dripping onto other probably-metal items below, with the occasional louder sounds when a big chunk of snow slides off the roof.

And I guess those are supposed to be sawing & luthier construction sounds in the "Remembering the First Mandolin ever Constructed" sample.

If nothing else, there's the old show-biz adage about "bad publicity is better than no publicity"...

After all, the person did wind up getting their sounds featured on their own thread here on this popular mandolin website... that's more than can be said for many of the rest of us here.

Also here's the interview portion of 1963 TV show with Steve Allen interviewing Frank Zappa. (clickie because embedding is disallowed on that video)

On a more serious note (which has the potential to ruin the thread, I know) I actually really like listening to Hillary Hahn's and Hauischka's improvisational recording. Hauschka is an experimental composer who plays a prepared piano (sticking stuff on the strings).

and a very nice video introduction that might be of interest to you creative types:

Upon listening to the sound clips I was surprised to discover I already knew some of the tunes.
