Default February Jazz tune of the month: There Will Never Be Another You

This months winner is There Will Never Be Another You.

Version 1 is swing, 150 beats per minute. Play the head, 3 improvised choruses and the head. At the end play measures 29 and 30 3 times, then the final 2 measures. This is a common way to end this tune at Jazz jams.

Version 2 is a ballad, 80 beats per minute. The form plays through twice with an ending of held chords: Fm7 Bb7 Emaj7 EbMaj7. Once again a standard Jazz ballad type ending.

    Hi Pete,
I was wondering what AV set up you use to post your lovely videos. Nice playing!
I’m not a techie at all and would like to know of a simple and practical method.
Anyone’s help at this point would be most welcome for me. I have an Ipad but find the sound poor.
I do have a microphone and H4N. I don’t know how to assemble both video and audio.
    Thanks, Barry

    Sounds good Pete!

Tried a bit of a chord melody thing with a chorus and a half of solos.

I record the video on a video camera and audio into my recording program, Reaper. I then strip the audio away from the camera feed and mix the video and Reaper audio together in a video editing program. A bit time consuming, but I like the results.

If you are video recording with an iPad, you have to play around with the distances from the iPad to both your mandolin and whatever you are using to play back the accompaniment MP3. Get the sound levels good that way, then hope the distance is good for video recording using your iPad. With a few minutes of doing this, you should be able to find an inexpensive workable solution.

    Best of luck!

You really do that style well. I'd probably get my guitar out to play that, I'd have to work that up on mandolin. Nice work.

Great stuff Pete and Alex. I have been working on the melody and chords. I'm finding it pretty tough so far given my lack of practice in Eb...but chugging away. Thanks for providing the charts!

Eb is an interesting mandolin key; first, it's relative to Cm and a lot of Italian stuff I played was in Cm.

Next, 2 of the 4 open strings can be used, the D and G strings, so you need to get that 4th finger working for the Ab on the 3rd string, Eb on the 2nd string, and so on.

I played most of the above example in Eb in first position, a few shifts up, but lots of 4th finger.

One way to get used to Eb is to take a simple tune you know in D and play it up a half step (no capo!) being careful of the fingerings.

The D and A string use the same pattern of W W H steps, fingers 1,2,3,4 respectively. This sameness is a useful place to start with fingering in Eb. The other strings vary a bit, but work with 1st position standard fingering.

Nice swinging improv, David. I really enjoyed that.....and the clever deployment of the tremolo bits. Your Italian roots are showing!

AND open A can be used as the flatted fifth of the Eb Major 7 chord! Get your bebop sounds easily this way.

    Good stuff David!

I have a song in Eb that I like so much that I am forced to play in Eb. It is called "River, Stay Away from My Door". I think that having cool songs in 'difficult' keys helps me to learn those keys. That is a good motivation, otherwise I would stick with the 'simple' keys.

How about this for a contrafact written by Horace Silver and performed by him with Art Blakey :

or the smoother Stan Getz version :

Touch of the Star Trek theme about the first 3 notes (in the Getz version with no intro)

    To quote Voltaire

" it is wise to kill an admiral from time to time to encourage the others."

So once again I'll attempt to murder this song to encourage others to have a go

in fact to boldly go where no mandolin has gone before (well it's possible)- so "There will never be another you" owing something to Split Kick / Star Trek

Here is a take I recorded. I successfully threw in a lick from Don's Tune #3 on Soundslice: Crafting jazzier solo lines on mandolin (https://www.soundslice.com/courses/247/).
I tried to throw in a Bud Powell lick that Christiaan van Hemert has on a Soundslice (https://www.soundslice.com/slices/TZfcc/) and Youtube lesson but threw it in measure early (oops).
