Restrung this old Sobell the other day towards a new recording project with top Scots singer George Duff. Sounds lovely so I thought I'd share. No, it is not for sale!

I edited the original post. The VIMEO and YT inserts use just the video identifier not the whole URL. for vimeo you just put in the 251832120 not the https://vimeo.com/251832120.

Great stuff Kevin, that Sobell octave sounds the business! There was a Sobell mandolin for sale here in the States at Elderly Instruments. I contemplated trading my Collings MTO towards the price of it, but waited too long and the Sobell sold -bah! Still kicking meself about that one!

Thanks Jill, those Sobells are pretty rare beasts. My pal Rory Dowling at Taran Guitars here in Scotland is making a Sobell style mandolin, and is making me one right now. I think you might like it! I'll do a video when I receive it. There are videos about the Taran "Springwell" mandolin on his website.
best wishes Kevin

Hey Kevin, is your Sobell for sale? Seriously, that's a lovely OM and it sounds mighty fine. I passed up a chance to buy a nice one here in the States a couple years back and still regret it. Thanks for the vid.
I thought the strings sounded suspiciously new, the re-read your OP - aha!

It looks quite a large body.
I keep wondering what to call my Sobell octave mandolin. It was sold to me in 1989 as an 8 string cittern, but it seems to me that the word cittern has since come to mean a 10 string instrument.
Maybe I should call it a bouzouki. If I tuned it GDad there would probably be no argument. I tune mine ADae and always have done so.
I've been playing mine quite a lot, as it happens. I have been doing a few gigs with Amy Henderson, who is a piano accordionist and singer with a really interesting left hand, and we find the octave works well with it.

I've lost some weight actually Dagger, thanks very much! Haha!
I think Stefan used two sizes of body build back then, and this is the larger one. Jock Brown has an octave mandolin here in Edinburgh but the body is considerably smaller. This has loads of warm ring about it, good under recordings and singers. An interesting left hand? Sounds a bit masonic to me!!
Seeing Duncan MacGillivray tonight in Glasgow where he is guesting with The Occasionals at our ceilidh in the main auditorium of RCH, should be fun to see him and hear his pipes again.
I think Stefan referred to this instrument as an octave mandolin, not a cittern. Peter Boond played a Sobell cittern or two, and they were both 5 courses and never octave tuned. I saw one of his last citterns the other day, Steph brought it along to show me. A fine instrument, sadly not being played but too precious to part with.
Up to your hurdies in snaw? Or down in Glasgow for Celtic Connections? Maybe see you there....

I think Stefan still does two different body sizes - have a look at his website.
The old citern/bouzouki argument seems stem from the longer scaled four course instruments of the late 70s and early 80s. They weren't that common but I remember being presented with something I was told was a "citern" in the studio and asked to play axactly the same notes that I'd played on a mandolin solo. It was tuned GDAE and I'd never heard of an octave mandolin back then.
In pre-internet days, you could call something what you wanted and get on with playing it!

Yes... But is it for sale though?
I'm sure I'm the first to ask *pretends not to notice at least one other post pulling the same wisecrack*
