I was looking at a Collings MT in the Classifieds, and noticed the specs say "Recommended String Gauge: D'Addario EJ74 11-40" Is the top going to collapse if it were strung 11.5-41?

Soliver arm rested and Tone-Garded Northfield Model M with D’Addario NB 11.5-41, picked with a Wegen Bluegrass 1.4
Doubtful, the EJ74 I think comes with a .015 A string, GHS 11-40 comes with a .016 A. I am using 11-16-27-41 and have used a 42 without a problem. A small difference in a couple strings is not a huge tension change and since these are already about the heaviest string for a mandolin it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm guessing that the add stated that as a means to say... set up with med gauge strings. Just my guess though.
Remember... when you change string gauges you'll need to make adjustments to the bridge.
