ok... so i went and busted my chops and learned this tune to the T and i go and listen to this recording of it done by a bunch of bluegrass guys and they are playing really slow and it isnt even ragtime style... whats up with that? (insturmental bluegrass with a whose who roster)
i have never heard jethro play the tune..... i may have heard a snippet of someone doing the tune in Bb and what is the point of that when the song was written in C..
does anyone actualy do this song ragtime style besides piano players?

im now coersing my bandmates into learning it.. hehehe wish me luck!

I have several recorded version that FLY! One is on the classic Hillbilly Jazz LP (Vassar Clements, etc.). Another is a Carl Jackson Banjo LP -- with a stunning guitar break by Glen Campbell.

Jim Bottorf's Banjo Page has a great site with words and chord changes in B flat and C. #Our own Mr. Tichnor has a killer version on the MP3 link and you can get the tab here to boot! Happy July 4th to all. I almost forgot Buddy Spicher's classic treatment of LRG w/ Merle Taylor, Dale Potter and Johnny Gimble on the Mando! "Me and my Heroes" Flying Fish records

Don't listen to my version then! It's in D, but I stopped playing it in that key about ten years ago. Jethro does it in Bb I think. One thing for sure, it's a great brain buster to move this piece into different keys. I've always been one that thought it's actually a healthy exercise playing tunes in different keys than in which they were written.

The composer of this piece, that bluegrass great Joe Sullivan has a couple of nice cuts LRG at this link. Be sure to listen to both versions. Quite different. I like the latter cut the best.
