Fedex delivered it a day earlier than their current estimate. Darn good thing the dear wife was home to sign for it. Now I'm trying to figure out, is this a legitimate reason to leave work early?

Shoot, you have to weigh what is more important-work or a new mando. I vote for the mando! Of course I’m retired so.......
Thanks
Several mandolins of varying quality-any one of which deserves a better player than I am.......
Aren't you feeling a little queasy and achy? Don't want to spread it all through the office, do you?
another vote for early release day....new mando is #1!
Take the rest of the day off with pay.

FedEx is almost always one day early here. We can pretty much count on it. It's kinda odd though, since we're out in the boonies, a long distance from their nearest distribution location. Occasionally they are "on time" (the initial scheduled delivery date) but it's not common. Only rarely are they later than originally predicted.
It might be a regional thing here, though.
We signed up for the FedEx email alerts, and anytime there's a package that's on the truck "out for delivery" (going to be being delivered that day, whether early or "on time") they'll send an email advising to expect a package that same day. Usually those emails are sent out early in the morning.
Once in a while there will be a package that doesn't even get put onto the delivery truck until around 11:00 am (thus the email notification is sent at that time as well), those packages show up later in the evening, sometimes as late as 8:30 p.m., rather than earlier in the afternoon.
Point being, with the email alerts, as least you have more 'real-time' feedback as to when to be on the watch for your package to show up. Instead of just guessing based on the initial estimate.
With UPS, on the other hand, in our experience here they are almost always on the exact day they originally specified, with very few exceptions.
We prefer FedEx though because we can go onto their website and leave specific instructions for *all* packages delivered to our address, so that stuff doesn't get left out in the rain. Most of the time we're home anyway, but we don't always hear when the delivery truck shows up, and things can get soaked with rain very quickly. In our experience the last year or so, FedEx has been excellent about following instructions as to safe package placement. Makes it easier for us to deal with.
Whereas with UPS, the only options for delivery instructions are generic useless multiple-choice selections such as "front porch", "back porch", "shed" (which shed? we have numerous sheds and outbuildings), etc., they won't let you type in any custom instructions as to where the driver should place packages.
But I'm off topic... off to my corner again now...
Anyway... Enjoy the new mandolin!

''FedEx''- Over here, they're a disaster. I had over $350 US worth of 'banjo bits' on order from First Quality several years back for my newly bought Gold Star banjo. After 4 weeks - nothing !.I e-mailed FQ & they sent me the tracking number. I used it & found that my goods were only 5 miles away & had been there for over 2 weeks. I Phoned FedEx & they told me that my goods were on the verge of being sent back to the US. They'd never been near my home !!!. In the UK, a Co.named DPD (Dynamic Parcel Distribution) are the very best - they are a German based Co.,so maybe i shouldn't be surprised !. They e-mail you well before delivery to inform you of the day,& on the day, you'll get an e-mail to in form you of the hour.
I can imagine logistics problems in a country the size of the USA,but in li'l ol' England - why FedEx can't hit it,i don't know,

Agree with Ivan about DPD, in fact they’re often early round my way! They also do this weird thing where they specify delivery will be between 1107 and 1207. No big deal I usually work on the basis that it’s DPD, better be home before that. But the driver has also waited outside the house if he’s early.
Think it comes down to the quality of the local depot and how realistic they are with the drivers’ schedules.
What does NMD mean on here? I’ve googled it, but google isn’t mandolin world, so their definition is flawed, it has to be!

It means New Mandolin Day. It is followed by the OP disappearing for a couple days to get acquainted with his/her new baby.
I purpose that an employee should be granted one week off with pay after receiving a new mandolin.

Well it is the Flu season and if you have the faintest of symptoms you should immediately go home as to not infect anyone else. The flu shot is only 10% effective this year, so they should thank you for being so considerate of others and the company.
Well good thing it arrived safely--and as you get or make the chance to play it--enjoy!
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?
