Thread: Left handed player looking to buy tenor guitar...

Default Left handed player looking to buy tenor guitar...

I'm interested in learning to play the tenor guitar. Is there a well-respected beginner instrument that someone would recommend? Should I be on the lookout for a smaller used guitar that I can convert?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

There are abundant new ones made, just get a shop/ luthier replace the notched string slots
to be the other way around.

using the DGBE 'Chicago' tuning should make the re training easy.

Won't the voicing be off unless I replace the nut and the bridge? How easy is it to find left-handed tenor guitar bridges?

I'm not a guitar player, only mandolin. I think this means mandola tuning is preferable.

you should ask your instrument technician., doing the work, that..

the flat top pin bridge would be removing the inserted bridge strip right? there are arch top floating bridge types too.

Tenor guitars are usually, but not always pin type bridges. With pin bridges it is not a simple matter to change from a right handed to a left handed instrument. The nut, and the whole bridge needs to be replaced. That is a significant amount of work since you need to remove the old bridge, make a new bridge, then glue the new bridge to the top.

I thought it was more common to fill the bridge slot and recut the slot with a lefty angle? I realize I'll need to replace the nut as well.

    Thanks for the help.

That's what I have done. It is easy enough to fill the slot and re-route. No need to take the bridge off.

There are under the bridge piezo pickup strips, that can also go in under that re cut slot, for the lefty bridge ..

that would be the time to do it.

Well I guess you could fill the saddle slot and re-route, but I would not do that on one of mine, but then I am thinking high end tenor, not a cheapie.
