    Default Watson Blues

Trying something new this week! I’ve been getting a lot of requests about how to use the licks in tunes, so I decided to do a full video of Watson Blues with all the licks I’ll be posting this week. I may do the same next week as well.

Also, when working on learning new tunes, I rarely listen to just one version. I try to grab licks and ideas from all sorts of tunes (and instruments). So I complied a Spotify playlist of all the versions of Watson Blues I was listening to while working on the song. I made it collaborative so if you want to add a version you like...please do!!!

(I'll still be posting breakdowns of the licks on the Lick of the Day thread for those who have been checking them out)

I somehow convinced myself I could play this and am following the Tone Poems version. What a wonderful piece of music.

Cool. Where's the Lick of the Day thread? Look forward to meeting you at Monroe Camp.

Edit: I see the original post is from 2017. Missed it the first time around.

First of all I will have to compliment you on your exemplary right hand technique, and really smooth tremolo. Mine is a bit rough.

I don't think in licks but, rather, devices.

Here you will find a home recording of mine of WB, from 2007: https://www.mandohangout.com/myhango...ch.asp?alpha=W

It has mandolin, rhythm guitar and a lead guitar entering after two choruses. The three mando choruses in varying degreee relate to the actual tune, the middle one least so. The guitar solo is completely improvised, and the rockabilly figure in the last chorus is something I found while recording the other parts. Examples of devices would be the repeated emphasis on the ninth of the dom7 chord, and tremolo -- much more of that on the first chorus than the last.

Since the tune has "blues" in the title, and starts with a blues lick, I use blues ideas throughout. I was so fascinated by that Watson lick (which he used in other tunes as well) that I ended the recording with it in three different octaves.
