Default New member - thank you

I'd like to say a thank you to all involved in the sharing of experience that this forum enables, and quickly introduce myself.
My user name is a description of my musical progress - "rather slow" - but that's fine with me. After a 40-year gap I restarted trying to play acoustic guitar a couple of years ago, and then moved on to try learning the mandolin. Music is a hobby during my retirement, and my hopes are simply to achieve a gradual improvement and enjoy playing.
I'm already grateful to this forum for the information and opinions that I have found while lurking for a couple of years, so thanks to all who have contributed to my slow progress so far.
    Best wishes to all,
    Lindsay.

Welcome Lindsay ! Great place for mandolin information ! Enjoy !
My two favorite pastimes are drinking wine and playing the mandolin but most of my friends would rather hear me drink wine! Adapted from quote by Mark Twain------supposedly !

Welcome Lindsay. You have stumbled onto the only place on earth where you can find out if an oval hole is better than a f hole, if a F style is better than an A, and most importantly which is best a Bloe Chip pick or a Fender Xtra heavy. After you learn these few simple facts, playing mandolin is a piece of cake.

Welcome, Lindsay. I, too, tried to re-learn a stringed instrument after a ~40 yr layoff. Wasn't having fun, so I dropped it (banjo) and moved on to something completely new and different to me - mandolin. I haven't looked back and I am enjoying it immensely. Learning is much more fun than relearning, yes?

Welcome, Lindsay. Another retired guy here who, like you, is learning just for the sake of enjoyment and the challenge in learning. Good luck and have fun on your journey.

Welcome, Lindsay. Saw you on another thread and noted you are a fellow Scot. I have been a regular at the Cafe here for a few years now and love the friendliness i have always encountered. i especially like the SAW group rune by Barbara Schultz and post there regularly. You are not too far away from me over here in Argyll on the "other" side of the Clyde and we have a regular very informal session every Thursday evening in a local bar, should you ever feel like making a ferry trip across.

John, thank you for the invitation - it's been quite some time since I was in your area, mid-70s I'd guess, and once before that, probably in the 60s, at the Cowal Gathering. The pipe bands are still in my memory from then, quite spectacular.
I can't quite match up to even the first part of your Eric Morecambe quote, that's just an aspiration for now, but maybe once I get near it I'll have a think about whether ensemble playing is a realistic ambition. A ferry trip is quite appealing, though.
    Lindsay.
