    Default "Wail" on 10-string

Live session at Paul Pieper's Jazz Workshop, recorded by one participant. Bud Powell's tune "Wail", and I take the first solo on my Almuse. Particularly pleased with these choruses, it was a good day for everyone.

Very cool, Tom, thanks! Excellent solo, and nice drumming behind you. Plus the horns sound a whole lot like on the original disc-- which takes me back to high school days, when Bud was one of my heroes.

Among other reasons I am in the workshop is to learn tunes that are new to me. I'm not really deeply versed in jazz repertoire.

Also, I have put in a lot of time on my acoustic instrument, but never really had a venue for electric playing. This setup has several times had me as the only harmony instrument, given the somewhat fluctuating attendance. The regular group is a sextet, two horns, mando, piano, electric bass and drums. We're all learners to some degree, and I am happy to have a weekly opportunity to blow over changes, and to develop comping comfort.

The touch on the electric is different, of course, although I tried to make my instruments match, asking Pete Mallinson to use the same scale length as a Buchanan, and I use nearly the same string gauges. We did design the electric to have a slightly slimmer neck, and Pete came up with a sweet profile, a bit of "V" for the cross-section. I'm playing straight into the amp, no effects, so I'm learning how to get pleasing tone from the playing and the tone settings on amp and mando.

I first used my Buchanan with magnetic pickup, and I also tried my Ryder 5-string. The 5 is sweet but less rich a sound than the 10-string electric, and sounds more toylike without overdrive and such. The 10 is fat on its own. I am a convert to doubled courses for the short scale of a mandolin---no value in single-string to my ears, and loss of expressive power. I can bend when I want, and slides seem to sustain better on doubled strings. Unfortunately, there is no standard-model 10-string electric I know of, and only two or three acoustic makers (Buchanan, Ribeiro). So to have a C course on an electric means a 5-string, unless one converts an 8-string to a short mandola---which I think many ought to try on their 8-string Mandocasters and Mandostrats.

Here's one more from another recording, showing the Ryder 5-string almost alone, just bass and drums. "My Favorite Things":

Not sure what's happening, but I think Soundcloud sometimes restricts embedding, Here's "Wail" as a link:
