Thread: truss rod pocket and headstock overlay

  1. #1

Default truss rod pocket and headstock overlay

How do people cut the hole in the headstock overlay to get at the truss rod pocket? My truss rod slot is cut. I have an LMII truss rod that I am about to put in, though it isn't yet installed. It seems like the truss rod should be in before the headstock overlay goes on, but I don't know how to cut the hole in the overlay without banging my tools on the truss rod.

I'd like it to look like this:

I've seen John Hamlett's method in his mandocello build thread:

I have a Dremel (though I'm much more comfortable with hand tools), but I can't figure out how Mr. Hamlett did what he did without whacking the truss rod nut.

Thanks as always for your help.

Simple. I set the depth of cut to just a tiny bit more than the thickness of the overlay, and since I know where the pocket is, I can draw the cut with a pencil, then route around the edge of the pocket. That keeps the cutter clear of the rod, but even if I route directly over the rod, the cutter is not deep enough to hit it. BTW, the nut is not on the rod yet when I'm routing the overlay.

I cut it out before I attach the overlay to headstock.

I also precut the hole. I like to use allen head nuts so that the pocket can be made as small as possible. I just made 2 mandos with no truss rod, just 2 glued up 1/8" x 1/2" carbon fiber rectangular strips - no truss rod cover.

I cut it with a jig saw before going on. Unlike everyone else I put the full overlay on so it looks like a paddle and cut the peghead shape with the overlay on, then rout for binding.
