Surprised that Swallow Hill didn't try to pick them up for a performance in Denver.

Saw Tommy in Albuquerque a few years back. I don’t think there’s a better player alive

    Nice, relaxed groove. Thanks, SternART!

btw, this number is tabbed out in Dave Peters' book.

One of the advantages of moving back to Kansas City is getting to go to things like this. Julia and I went and had seats on the 4th row center. The concert was in the Midland Theater which is a huge barn of a theater, but the sound guys smoothed that out.

The opening act was Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, and they played for about 50 minutes. I could have left then and been happy--they put on an impressive show. What more can you say about Ickes--a consummate dobro player. I had never seen Trey before and he was amazing! Lightning fast flat picker, excellent vocals!

Had a break and then Emmanuel and Dawg came out and played for about 90 minutes. Of course, the music was stunning! But the best part was watching them interact. They both seemed really pumped about being there and showed genuine affection for each other. Like old friends playing together that could read each other's minds and know exactly where the tune was headed. My favorite was "Tipsy Gypsy" but everything was top drawer.

At the end they brought out Rob and Trey and played a few last tunes. And for an encore Grisman and Emmanuel came out and played a simple version of "Waltzing Matilda".

Definitely one of the best concerts I'll see in my lifetime. And a thrill so be so close to two legends!

I got to see them last night in Des Moines at the Hoyt Sherman theatre, I would whole heartedly agree with Phil’s post

Such amazing talent! And Trey Hensley and Rob Ickes were an unanticipated treat. My friend looked at me after they opened and said, “that’ll be hard to top” and then after the show, “I didn’t know how they were going to top it, but they did!”

Thanks to the Dawg! And Tommy! And Trey and Rob!
I should be pickin' rather than postin'

It seems such a natural fit.

Have they toured or recorded together before?

I've been listening to the new CD for a few days now. I think it'll get played a lot. Really love it.

I agree..... just got my CD and the quality of the recording is fabulous, like you're right there in the room with them. Great duet playing, the way they listen & respond rhythmically to each other is pretty darn special!!!

Has anyone else been to the shows? How have they been? My first time seeing Grisman. (well, the rest of them too but Grisman was the big draw for me) I thought he was a little erratic early in the set. It was the third show in three nights at the start of the tour, possibly a little fatigue? Or maybe my ears just weren't tuned. He left the stage for a bit & Tommy (wow, what a talent) did a couple solo numbers and then one with Rob & one with Trey before he called David back out. Has that been the format on the tour? I thought David seemed like a different player when he came back out & the rest of the set was superb. The final tunes with Trey & Rob joining in were amazing!
