John Abercrombie Mandolin Interview

John Abercrombie died this week (August 22, 2017) and the folks at Fretboard Journal just posted a previously unpublished interview where he discusses his work on electric mandolin, conducted by the talented John Kruth in 1984, online.

I've always loved Abercrombie's many recordings featuring electric mandolin (I don't care how he tuned it) and I was pleased to see him cite Jethro Burns as an influence. I also liked how he said he came to see the mandolin as his second voice, much like John Coltrane with the soprano sax.

The interview is a great read but listening to those old recordings is even better. I was listening to his solo album Characters yesterday while walking in the woods. There's nothing quite like it.

Awesome! I heard Abercrombie passed earlier this week, and I was hoping to find something exactly like this.

Thanks for sharing. A great interview and I hadn't heard the Abercrombie/Scofield record before. Looks like I have something to listen to this week.
