Thread: NashCamp - Which mandolin should I take?

  1. #1

Question NashCamp - Which mandolin should I take?

I'm taking mandolin classes with Matt Flinner next week at NashCamp. I have a choice between a Proulx J5 (all wood construction) or a Mix A5 (carbon fiber body). Given the weather in Nashville (hot and sometimes rainy), and the movement inside and outside, which would you recommend I take?

Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

I'd say the Mix. It could get rained on and still be OK. At a festival, a mandolin could get knocked around a bit and I'd think carbon fiber is more durable.

Well... If you have an instrument you prefer to play take it and play it.

Arrive early, stop by Carter's and pick up a beater Loar. Kidding, I freak about taking my instruments out of the house. Have a blast with Matt!

Matt is an awesome teacher and Nashcamp is a blast. Great folks.

Take whichever mandolin you like playing better. (The Mix would be pretty great for Nashcamp unless you really like the other one better.)

I've been to Nashcamp, and they kept the inside at like 60 degrees and outside it was like 95 degrees, and you're going in and out all day. If the Mix was ever at home in a situation, it's at Nashcamp.

And YES. Definitely stop by Carter.

(Caveat, Nashcamp is at a different facility now so I'm not sure about the AC in the new facility.)

    Have fun!

Verdict is ...... the Mix ... I had the Proulx packed and am too nervous to take it. I bought the Mix years ago after attending David Grisman's camp and having to keep an eye on my mandolin all the time! I'm going to take a Journey guitar too, and just not worry about the weather or humidity
