    Default Weber Yellowstone Refinished

This started on this thread awhile back. I'll post before and after pics here also. This mandolin had some awesome flame that was hidden and with all the heavy finish removed this mando really barks now.

Nice job! I didn't know Weber used particularly heavy finish on their mandos.

Exactly how has the sound changed?

I personally am a big fan of black mandolins, but I cant imagine why that flame back was covered . . .

It's definitely louder, and what I consider a woody tone that wasn't there before. I had the same thing happen on an F4 that somebody had refinished and put way to many coats of nitro on. Yes there was quite a lot of finish it looked like pounds of stuff sanded off, that's an exaggeration but it was pretty tough to get off

Sorry - yes, now that I am on a better computer, I can see that.

Still don't know why such a nice flame was so heavily covered. Nice job bringing it back!

I see it's got one of the all wood Weber bridges, it might get even louder with the new Brekke traditional bridge, or a CA.

Martin, I noticed you filled in the "pinky wear" and replaced it with "pick rash"? What did you use as a filler?
    Charley

A bunch of stuff with four strings

Charles, didn't fill it with anything just sanded the existing finish off then went back with some lacquer, the pick rash is actually below where the previous spot is. I was going for the wear I saw on another Weber that was a distressed model and this is as close as I could get it.
It's hard to see in the pics but if you look close you can see where the previous spot was at.

It could be that they chose a dark finish that hides the flame because the back, although 2 pieces, is obviously not bookmatched. Probably not even slip matched. It looks like the two halves came from totally different trees.
