    Default Replace Headstock Inlay?

Recently saw a luthier's web site where he removed an inlay for a customer who did not like it. He then cleanly trimmed out the inlay inset and glued in a piece of matching wood to replace the inlay. Into this he installed another inlay and refinished headstock.

Of course I didn't bookmark the site and can't find it in my history. If anyone recalls seeing this please respond so I can save it.

Maybe seems ridiculous, I've had my eye on some Weber two point mandos and I hate the skull they put on the headstock so I would have to figure in replacement cost if I purchase.

    Thanks in advance!

The standard inlay for the Weber two-points was the Bighorn Shield (an elongated diamond with an engraved knot). There were some custom instruments done with the buffalo skull. I'm sure that Bruce Weber at Montana Lutherie could replace the veneer with another design if you cannot find a standard Bighorn. Unfortunately, the skull would be fairly hard to overlay (and look good) with another design (without removing the veneer) because of its position on the veneer. A few of the inlay options that I did for Weber can be seen at: http://www.bridgerproducts.com/about.../weber_designs. Bruce and I could also do something custom for you.

I have the same problem, except it's a tattoo I got in 1991!

    Vern,
Yes, I've seen the Shield you're referring to but I've seen the skull too.
There just aren't that many Weber two points out there.
Most of the ones I've seen have bound headstocks, wouldn't that complicate matters if
replacing the entire veneer although I believe that would be the best route.

I'm not a cowboy and I don't come from the Wast so the skull does nothing for me.

BTW: I've got a brand new Brekke bridge (the one with the wrench) that I hope to use someday.

The skull is used through many businesses in Montana. The State uses it in their visitor promotional materials. It is from a drawing by Charlie Russell. If you have to ask who he is, then you ain't from around these parts.

Most of the buffalo shot during the great killing spree of western expansion was for the harvest of hides for carriage blankets for people out east. It must have been awesome before the herds were decimated! Sad.

I know who he is, not my favorite artist.
Western themes hold no interest for me (except landscapes).
And you're right, I'm not from them parts.

A lot of them they just cut the tongue out and left the rest but we're getting off the subject at hand.

Adding binding to the veneer will add some extra cost, but is a standard operation for Bruce.

I hope that you can find a Bighorn, they were consistently some of the best sounding instruments that Weber made.

Hello. Dan Voight recently replaced a mandolin inlay...which is most likely the one you saw.

    Here is the link. https://www.facebook.com/23731991296...649592/?type=3
