I never used to like tortoise binding, but I've grown to like it a lot lately, especially when combined with layers, and this has got to be the most beautiful binding and color combo I've ever seen!!!

I saw it too and got a bit choked up because I knew it would never own one like it.

    Remarkable instrument!

I'm in the same camp with tortoise binding but, for that...I'd learn to LOVE it!

I don't deserve it, but as soon as I cash in my Lotto ticket, I'm buying this Ellis and a new house with a wrap-around porch from where I can play it.

    I love the tortoise binding.

I think that one's finished in what Tom Ellis refers to as a ''Dark-burst'' ,& it's my favourite of his finishes. If i had the cash,i'd buy it in an instant,

It caught my eye for sure. Amazingly beautiful instrument.

But more and more, I don't care what the back looks like at all. No one sees it other than posting glamour shots on the internet or when you try to sell it down the road.

It's more than that. A feature as beautiful as that would give many proud owners a lot of satisfaction.

That's true, to the extent that one shouldn't buy a mandolin based on what the back looks like alone. Fortunately, Ellis mandolins sound just as great as they look. The beautiful back is just icing on the cake.
Keep that skillet good and greasy all the time!

    Yes, YMMV.

I would also be sick if I got belt rash on such a fine instrument.

Careful selection of premium materials on a high quality instrument just underscores the fact that you are playing the real thing. I don't think anyone has ever demonstrated that figured maple, whether on a violin, guitar, or mandolin is a noticeable sonic improvement over non-figured wood, but the luthier's tradition runs deep. We love these objects almost as much for their beauty as for the sounds we can coax from them. I'm pleased to live in this new golden age of instrument building where so many gorgeous and wonderful sounding instruments spring from the hands of builders who have a life-long commitment to producing the very best that is possible.

Good looking mandolin, by the way.

As my grandma used to say, "Why couldn't I have been born rich instead of so darn good-looking?" If I was rich, that mandolin would be mine!

Tobin has it !!. I'd bet that with any Ellis mandolin, you'd have a truly incredible sounding mandolin. Tom's work is up there with that of any of the other top mandolin luthiers you can name. Some of the woods he uses are off the planet stunning, as per the back on this one. The back of my own Ellis "A" style is a long way from being so sumptuous in appearance, but there's no mistaking the awesome tone !,

OK, for five years I've dropped the hint about "All,Y'all" sending the funds to Bill Halsey for a mandolin for my birthday, and for whatever reason, I have not yet received it. Maybe "All Y'all" can just pool it for this one.
See, I'm not particular, just discriminating!
    Birthday is late August!
PS, I know times are hard so, if the Pava F-5 is all you can swing, I'm not going to complain!!

I tried out this Ellis a couple of days ago and loved the clarity, punch, and playability, in addition to the beautiful quilted back.

It's dangerous to live 5 minutes from the Music Emporium :-).

I'm sending a big check by drone.

Go stand outside and wait for it.

I've been keeping my distance, although it appears Elvis has left the building (the mandolin is sold).

That's got to mean that you guys all chipped in and it's on the way! I promise I won't open it until my Birthday! Or Monday whichever comes first.
So Bob, you're sending the copy of the check, you're so kind!

The F5 Reserve was supposed to be delivered today but got delayed. I should get it tomorrow. My wife told me happy anniversary and happy birthday even though both of those are later this summer. I'll give an update when I've had some time with it. It joins its sibling Ellis A5 Deluxe and my Holst C5.

    Best regards,

    Leon

Agreed Leon, you are a lucky man indeed. Enjoy the mandolin, and make sure you play a pretty tune for your wife.
