Default Sierra Hull and Ethan Jodziewicz in concert, June 9, 2017

This was our vantage point from the Sierra Hull and Ethan Jodziewicz concert last night in Olathe, KS. Great evening that started out with The Freight Hoppers warming up.

I was sitting about six feet south of Scott. It was a great show, with lots of variety, virtuosity, and taste. It was music and musicianship of the highest caliber.

Awesome vid, Scott. Many thanks for posting as I now have a new mandolinist to follow.

For as long as I can recall, this is the type of true musicianship that really speaks to me. Complex, progressive, virtuosic instrumental music. Regardless of genre or instrument I will probably love it.

This of course means that I've heard and read every type of denigrating comment imaginable about these types of musicians, snide remarks which get parroted ad nauseum every time a new player's player finds their voice: 'Soulless dribble'. 'Robotic wankery'. 'Base noodling'. 'Sounds like Jazz'.

If you're gonna complain about it, at least come up with a good reason. 'That ain't music' has been tapped out for a long, long while.

I can't see the video in the original post but if this is the one (https://instagram.com/p/BVJDYPpFGeD/) I quite like it. It's got a good groove. She has a great tone there IMHO.

Superb; great to see Sierra branching out, and Ethan is always really interesting. For those who haven't been aware of Ethan, he's also part of Mr Sun with Joe K. Walsh and has done some really nice old-time interpretations with Tatiana Hargreaves. With Sierra, the sky's the limit!

You're right. That would've been much better if Sierra played nothing but chop chords and Ethan played 1, 5 the whole time.

Thanks for posting the Instagram link...great seats, Scott! Those 2 are phenomenal.

I had front row seats for Thile/Fleck a couple of weeks ago. They played some phenomenally complex music, much of which was original and written together. It was amazing and very enjoyable to listen to. But, the biggest rise they got out of the (fairly subdued "theatre" setting) crowd was when they played a couple of bluegrass songs. The theme from the Beverly Hillbillies got them probably their biggest ovation of the night, and jumps to my still decaffeinated mind. Hardcore bluegrass fans want bluegrass! I'm a fan, but not to the degree of excluding everything else. I'm hoping all of Chris and Bela's collaborating leads to an album that's as musically phenomenal and quirky as they are, lol...

We see that all the time! As adventurous as some musicians get, there's always that grounded hook that people like to hear. It's the comfort food thing. Frog's legs and fried jellyfish (real menu item) always give way to a cheeseburger. Ever notice how vegetarians compare their veggie burgers to the real thing? "You'll love it, it tastes like meat!"

Music is no different. We've had some very adventurous people come through, but the ones who last know they have to throw some of those anchor hooks out there that everyone can smile at. It's probably the one mistake some of the really good young bands make: it'll be tons of virtuosity, great musical ideas and creativity, but they forget that once ever 30 minutes or so, you gotta throw some desert out there.

No mandolin content, but I've never compared a good veggie burger to the "real thing." And, I sure hope it doesn't taste like meat. I call veggie burgers…burgers without the blood vessels. This, coming from someone (me) who used to live on a working cow/calf operation (farm) in eastern Kansas.

Fantastic video, Scott. Great to see Sierra thinking out of the box and letting her creativity shine!

I just got home from seeing them tonight. What an amazing show. Folks who only wanted to hear bluegrass didn't get much - one Scruggs tune and one Monroe tune, but the rest was so beautiful and mind boggling that I hope everyone was entertained.
