Thread: Tuning Code - G4, C4, etc.

    Default Tuning Code - G4, C4, etc.

    Hey All -

I should know this, but I don't. Can someone explain the tuning code that is used to describe various tunings for stringed instruments? Specifically wondering about the number that follows the note (G4, C4, etc.) Thank you!

Those denote an octave range. Like this: http://www2.siba.fi/muste1/index.php?id=58&la=en

A4 is the note, at 440 Hertz, which is used for tuning to "concert pitch" - It is the note above middle C on the piano, as shown in the diagram jim P has included. C4 is middle C, the C an octave below this is C3, and so on.

Thanks for asking the question and thanks for the responses - especially that diagram of the piano keyboard.

I should have put in that our instrument tuning, referring to the piano board, is: G3, D4, A4, E5

Thanks for the responses! I didn't know the meaning of A4, G3, etc. in the electronic tuners.

The interesting thing to notice is that the octave changes when going from B to C.
