Costumes aside, women don't normally perform in hats.
Texas Country Thing. Consider it part of the Cowboy uniform. These days a lot of folks do it for asthetics but when I was growing up in cow town East Texas it was for practical purposes. Spend all day working in the hot Texas sun baking and you'll immediately develop a love for this portable shade device and not want to go outside without it.

Sombreros serve a similar purpose but tend to get caught and ripped off your head when chasing a steer through thick brush.

Wall Hangers - 1970's Stella A and 60's Kay Kraft

Whether you slow your roll or mash on it, enjoy the ride.

Apparently Potrer Wagoner once told Dolly Parton that "If you look like a member of the audience, maybe that's where you should be." Although I don't buy that idea completely (I would look pretty ridiculous in a Nudie suit), I do have a general rule for live preforming - if you are playing on stage and can go directly to the beach or a picnic, without having to change clothes, you are under-dressed.
