Tobin - I have a small brimmed Stetson 'style' hat that i wear in bad weather, similar to the one in the horse pic.in your post. It's far better than an umbrella in high wind & heavy rain.
I also have a Bailey's U-Rollit straw Stetson that i bought in Bowling Green Ky,back in 1992. I sometimes wear that in very hot weather - i've had a few odd looks over here, mind you,i get those anyway !!!,

I throw a huge music party every year, (over 50 attendees for over 10 years running) and one of the themes is bowlers. I have a silver grey felted beaver bowler that I adore and wear prominently at my party. More importantly I have bowlers available to everyone who doesn't have one. I get the better party favor bowlers, with the fuzzy surface, that look ok from a distance. I am told they are often used in crowd scenes in movies.

It is wonderful to see all the folks in bowlers at my party. It is just amazing. And more than a few, tired of my party favor bowlers, have purchased fine bowlers of their own to wear at my party. Changing the world one hat at a time.

I have long thought there should be a Mandolin Café bowler. I (for one) would not hesitate to wear it.

I'm always wearing a hat or cap. Grew up on a farm. Hats are special.
Billy Collins (the poet) wrote a wonderful poem called "When Men Wore Hats". Worth the search to find and read it.

I was told that if I want to be in the band, I have to put my hat on. I didn't ask why.

Bill, that is strange, it shows up for me and I can play it with no problem. I had this happen to me in another thread a week ago too.

We just tried three different browsers on my wife's computer and the link showed and played on all of them. I am stumped.

Three browsers? So I suppose that would be a hat trick.

A rigid brimmed cowboy topper is better than a snake rattle and a tone guard and an armrest put together at improving the tone of a mandolin - by deflecting sound into the player's ears.

Utah Phillips: "Men should wear hats. Baseball hats worn backwards and sideways do not constitute hat wearing or any fashion statement. If you don't have a Stetson then a Borsalino fedora will do."

Backward and sideways hats are indicator of a lack of understanding and appreciation of hats and the intent of a hat and IMNSHO make you look like a fool.

Wearing a hat of any kind indoors is indicative of a lack of respect for others and for convention, tradition and civility and is simply bad manners.

Shall we now talk about wearing shorts. ?

Let me correct my earlier reference to the Billy Collins' poem : The Death of the Hat.

Pardon my intrusion. We were about to start talking about wearing shorts? Not in public for guys in their later 60's. At least not in public.

I wear my hat when I play because if I take it off, I'll lose it.

I tried a "Borsalino Sound Enhancer" on the top of my head and I can confirm all of fifths' comments - it works.

The morning after I got out of the army, I went clothes shopping in my uniform - sans hat - and I have to confess to feeling verrry defiant and very nervous at the same time. (Ach! … such a rebel!)

I love hats, I have at least 15 of them, including several Stetsons (one of which is a very cool Fedora).

I hardly ever wear them, however, because I don't want to mess up my hair.

I grew up wearing caps (farm machinery, or seed dealer) , cowboy hats (stetson or straw). I wore them indoors and out. I even wore them to the supper table if mom wasn't home. Then I joined the Marine Corps where I learned that covers (marine speak for hats) are never worn indoors unless under arms. Now I'm got panamas I wear when I mow. I have wide brimmed camping hats. But what I really have a hankering for is a fedora or a porkpie.

I think it is about looking cool and trying to stand out from the crowd! (that is, assuming my music actually draws crowds...)
