Am I crazy or is he about $15000 too much on this? And with rusted strings?

You gotta admit - for $19K - the sound clip in the video is... priceless
I missed the video clip.... I almost bought this one a handful of years ago.

Well, at least he offers free shipping!
I thought about making an offer of $19
He says; make him an offer and see where it lands! I imagine it's probably pretty good although you can't tell from the vid...lol's. $3-4k range maybe?. If I were in the oval market though it might be one of Will Kimble's. I think he's got some of Gilchrist's mojo in there.

I'd expect it to sell for $3500ish. Even the Dawg's Red Diamond F only brought in about $7k
In picture #8 what's up where the nut meets the headstock? Something really looks off there.

Really? When and where? What was the serial number?
Don't see any vid there, he must have removed it?

He says, "I am not a professional", but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night!
Red Diamond, #137. It isn't one of the Crusher replica series, but a custom F5, listed at $7500.

Red Diamond owner's list shows it currently owned by Robert Remington, Vancover, BC, but that is who appears to have sold it last year. Must not be updated to new owner, or perhaps it didn't sell.

2014 snapshot of it from Wayback machine, shows it owned by David Grisman

Wow. Thanks, Mr. Al. There's a Red Diamond A5 for sale right now at Music Emporium for $7,000. A while back they had a used roasted Red Diamond F5 that sold for $12,500 if memory serves me correctly. Back in line with this thread, I didn't even know Don ever made an oval hole mandolin until I read it here.
Here's a 2012 Red Diamond A5 for $4200

According to the owner's list, there are 7 A(oval) Red Diamonds out there.
#69, 74, 81, 82, 105, 136, 177
And 2 F(oval)
#132, 174
Looks like the listing "ended due to seller error in listing", so perhaps it will resurface with a more realistic price on it!

I think you would have to wonder is it THAT much better than a (for example) Collings.

So, I sent a message to the guy who had this on ebay, asking if it is still available. He replied (message from: raffi50) Hi thanks for the message. I didn't sell it yet. I was selling it for my mother, but she needs to make her mind up on a price she is willing to accept so I can list it for a reasonable price.
I messaged him back... with fatherly advice... gleaned from this thread, as follows.
There is a 2012 Red Diamond A5 for sale on reverb dot com. The guy is asking $4200
Though these usually sell for closer to the $3,500ish range.
I'm not trying to ruin your day just bring things into perspective.
There are quite a few modern high quality mandolin makers out there lately... Collings, Webber, Gilchrist. The list is endless.
If I was you, I would list it for $3,995.00 or best offer. Then again, If you were me, I would keep it and learn to play it.
Best of luck, what ever you decide,
Michael
P. S. If you do relist it, please let me know.
I hope I did the right thing. I'll keep you posted
Evidently she or her son did a quick Google search and found the price for a Red Diamond Replica Series -- there is currently an Osborne F style on Reverb with a list price of $20K plus $149 shipping. I'm guessing that is where the price came from. Hard to break the news to someone who is "out of the loop" so to speak.......
I may have told this story before, 25 years ago my neighbor, a retired guy, saw me loading my band equipment for a gig and came over to talk music. He told he used to play and that he still had a 1959 Les Paul and I could come over and check it out if I wanted to. I said sure, why not, went up into his attic and there was a mint condition cherry red 1961 Gibson SG Les Paul with its original case. It was a thing of beauty. Before I could ask if he wanted to sell it, he hands me a copy of the Wall Street Journal with an article stating that late 50's Les Paul's were bringing $45K, if I remember the price correctly at the time. He explains he bought it used in 1963 and figured it was a late 50's Les Paul. (keep in mind before the internet very few people outside of the vintage "biz" had access to information used to date a guitar, so an honest mistake on his part) His guitar MAY have been worth $2500 at the time, at BEST. (which was a heck of a lot of money for a "glorified" SG!) I saw no point in correcting him, as I couldn't afford a $2500 guitar, let alone a $45K guitar, so I just said, "wow, it sure is nice!" And let it go at that. For all I know that guitar is still in the attic and he probably still wants $45K for it!
He texted me back. He wants $5,000 but knows about the 2012 Red Diamond A5 on reverb for $4200 so he is "open to offers". Reality is beginning to set in.
I agree with that Shaun, For an oval Red diamond for that much WoW nuts man!, Krazy prices by some people who think they have the gold. You could get one H___ of an F-5 by any of the great makers for that price, some even less. Like the old saying goes that we all know way too well suckers are born/made every second, I'll go with!
If I remember correctly that was one heck of a great sounding mandolin Red Diamond #137, for some reason that I remember a soundclip and for the $$ that was well worth it, and that was a kinda basic model, wasn't roasted or a replica series!
The Red Diamond listed on Reverb is not from 2012. It is one of Don's earlier mandolins (before he started the vintage series).
So this https://reverb.com/item/4250720-red-...d-a-style-rare isn't a 2012 ???
