    Default Electric Bill

So out of pure curiosity and playfulness I am learning Bill Monroe's Southern Flavor - on my Fender MandoStrat four string, through some heavy metal distortion.

That iconic chord progression, G, B, Em, I think it is, done with double stops... wow. Talk about "ancient tones". I think I am waking up the giant Fingal in his cave in the Inner Hebrides. Or channeling him.

Not quite ready for prime time but I am having fun.

Playing the tune with the electric seems to strip away the traditional feeling of the tune. It is kind of like hearing those intervals for the first time.

I expect when I get it up to speed that it will be kind of jarring and in your face.

But I was thinking perhaps it sounded kind of jarring the first time Bill played it, for ears not "prepped" by the culture of music they were used to.

Being able to give respect while stretching boundaries is really special. Taking something familiar (even loved or sacred) and putting it in a different context is a completely valid approach to art. Been done by folks a whole lot more famous that us for centuries.

Try this for an entire album of Bill done electric. It's all a re-working of "Master of Bluegrass" and is great stuff.

Good on ya, Jeff! I heard Southern Flavor for the first time this past Sunday on WKCR's Moonshine Show here in NYC. Immediately added it to my list of tunes to learn. Bet it sounds dope with some distortion!

Well then you likely know the three chord progression at the end of the A part that is soooooo cool. Well through the MXR Fullbore Metal pedal, those three chords let all the bees out.

And when I drop the whole thing one octave through my POG, well, the earth moves, seems like.

Look, I barely know what I am talking about with this electric stuff, and I am just happy to be trying cool stuff and to know enough to repeat it over again.

Hey man, sounds pretty sick to me. Sadly, I don't have a POG, but I do like to lay down a loop on my Ditto, and make all sorts of noise on top of it. A RAT combined with Deluxe Memory Man usually does the trick. Or a volume pedal for swells. I'll have to try a fiddle tune or two thru that setup.
