    Default Kripplekrunk

Caught their show last night (they only play a few shows a year). Too much for me to comment on but I'll leave it at "one of the best fiddle, banjo, mandolin, guitar, bass bands I've heard". Period (warning -not trad bluegrass)

Every tune left me stunned. Danny Nicely played as cool a mandolin break as I've heard and I've heard a few. The things he could do with this 'style' of music is beyond description. Rex McGee is an unassuming banjo genious while John Garris (video 2:20)did things on guitar that I couldn't wrap my mind around. With all that, I spent the evening fixated on Nate Leath, a Berklee trained fiddle player.

Kripplekrunk is a super group of players that met at Galax and get together to do the impossible - "veritable sampler of stylistic sampler echoing bluegrass, old-time, new acoustic, celtic, cajon, R&B, southern rock, swing, jazz, and world music . . . sometimes all in one tune"

Anyway if you get a chance to see them - do it - you won't think of music the same way afterwords

And for mandolin content, Danny Knicely surely can play the snot out of that thing!

They would fit on Siriusxm 'bluegrass junction'. They have a banjo.

Mark, if you know those guys very well, that means we've almost certainly met, and that would mean that I'm not putting a face with your name. (?)
Yep, those guys are great musicians, but what they play can be a little inaccessible for the casual listener (who wants to hear Wagon Wheel... again). Guess that's why they spend their time as pharmacists, teachers and such...

I don't know them well. One of the guys I play with knows Rex and Ralph and took me to the show.
Yeah their show is not for the casual bg listener. One of the coolest bands I've heard in years tho

"Acoustic jazz" seems like it would be a perfectly appropriate description. Django's band wasn't bluegrass either, bit I don't hear anyone complaining.

Danny Nicely is one of the best mandolin players I have had a chance to hear in festival settings. The Charlottesville - Harrisonburg VA area produces many fine musicians, must be something in the water.

Yeah Danny is an incredibly talented mandolin player.

One of the coolest things - middle of the show - they all got out their fiddles and came out to the floor. 4 fiddle guys rocking some jig tunes out among the audience.

Danny Knicely (note spelling) could possibly be the best mandolin picker you never heard of. Always fun to catch him at Galax in whatever jam he happens to be in. And last year, he spear-headed this awesome recording

I went to a mando workshop that Danny taught and watched him play Take Five on a left handed mandolin.....Danny is right handed! He didn't miss a note. A truly awe inspiring musician!

I've had the privilege spend a fair amount of time with Danny over the past 10 years. He is the best mandolin player you've never heard of. He can play anything with strings & I'm not surprised by his playing a left-handed mando. To top it off he is a great teacher, unassuming, and a good guy to hang with. I hope to catch up with him this summer and see if he's got any "new" jokes.

Mountain Funk! I love that stuff, and it must be a geographical thing, but they'd be very much in-demand up in New England. Maybe even enough to quit their day jobs. We love our old Galax hippies on the strange side, like the Horseflies
