Any thoughts or recommendations on stand-alone software to record on a Mac? Is Audacity still out there? I don't need ProTools, just something I can do some simple demos on, maybe with a couple of overdubs

Sounds like the included GarageBand software might work just fine for you. I've known people who've recorded entire albums using that software.
Audacity is still out there and still free. Reaper gets good reviews and is in inexpensive. It has a free trial period. Ardour is another one. It used to be free. I don't know if it still is.
Garage band is great. Easy to use. The new update is pretty cool.
Logic is an easy step up. You get familiar with the interface and that makes going from GB to Logic a smooth upgrade.
Logic is also relatively cheap now. I really like it. Pro Tools are still industry standard and that makes it easier to share files but it's still possible with Logic.

+1 for GarageBand for simple stuff. I'm using it with a Scarlett 2i2, and it just works.
Yeah, I'll try GB. I've messed with it before, but it kept wanting to add in tracks and effects when I just wanted a clean recording. See if it'll work with my FocusRite
Thanks!
I've used GB with reasonable results with my Focusrite a couple of times. Think I used the vocal setting David suggested to avoid the "effects." That said, I need to play with it more and really learn how to maximize it...
Know what you mean, mcgroup53. I usually go thru conniptions to * just * get * a * clean * track, but you get there eventually.
I really like having the mastering compressor/EQ - OK, it's not a ProTools plugin, but for a light pass on the export of the final, it's just fine.
Absolutely GarageBand, since it is included and well supported. If you outgrow it, you can move to Logic without a big learning curve.
I go back and forth between Logic and Protools depending on what I am doing and what plugins I need access to.

Our album's engineer works in protools but has nothing but good words for logic.
