Default Who's tried the new D'Addario flattops?

I haven't bought one of these sets yet, although I probably will soon:

Somebody emailed me to ask about the .015 A strings, and he seems to think they're different than other D'Addario .015s. They're not, are they? Just a typical plain, unwound loop-end .015, correct?

Do you know what the material is? I used to use their flatwounds for my archtop, but the stainless material was doing a number on my frets.

These are not Flattops, they are flatwound. They are the same as the old FW74 from seven years ago, only the packaging has changed. The 15s are plain steel, the two wound strings are the same material as the electric guitar Chrome Flatwound, just with loop ends.

Argh. Need more coffee. Evidence to the contrary, I do know the difference between flattop and flatwound ... I might even have it written down somewhere. Thanks, Ted!

Thanks for the clarification - so these are SS strings.

What if I really was asking about flattops?

Do these have a wound A?

The flat tops do have a wound A. Rigsby uses them on his Sorensen, so of course I tried them. Easy on the hand, brighter than flat wounds.

I currently have them on my A5, and while I like them (makes it less bright/more woody), my A strings are buzzing on frets 2-5, dangit.

I honestly can't tell if the A's are wound or not - they feel & look unwound, but they're the same color as the G & D's. The E's are steel colored. If they are wound, that might explain the buzzing I'm getting.

I see that they're higher tension than regular EJ74s, even the G, which is 0.039. Interesting.

I love the wound A (.015) to use as the high D in my 20 inch octave (GDAD). Sounds so smooth and rich. Unfortunately I can't get them in singles so if I want them I need to buy the whole pack for 2 strings

Yes, ... initially , Round wound with Bronze, then ground to have a Flat Top.

the steel core of the A is super thin, I barely got a hour out of gentle playing before they snap, so ...

IMHO, I'd put a Plain A on in the beginning.

& then sell the FT wound A's to Chuck..
