I'm looking for a case for a J Bovier A5X that I picked up. This case is $30 right now. I seem to remember that they had decent reviews here, but I haven't used one.
Anyone get one recently?

As a Musicians friend Brand , The name has changed since I got a Case from them ,many years ago..

It may be big but you can create your own lining padding blocks with a little handicraft DIY.

If It Doesn't work for you they will take it back..

I used to have an F-style Musician's Gear case for a previous mando and currently have my 12 string in one of their dreadnoughts. Found them both to be very good sturdy cases for the price (esp. since I got them both on sale). Is it a tour-ready Calton, Hoffee, Hiscox, or even TKL? Nope. Will it keep an instrument safe around the house and going to jams? Absolutely.

I had this case for my Kentucky before I upgraded to an Eastman 515. It held up well and kept closed through several trips. It was a good size for a foot stand while sitting and didn't buckle under the weight of my foot or my toe tapping. I also liked that the compartment was large enough for several items (my Eastman case is much smaller). I paid $45, so at $30, that's a steal!

I've had their hard shell cases and they were fine, I've never had their durafoam case.

I bought the A-style Musician's Gear case for my Johnson mandolin last fall from Guitar Center and hauled it to the East Coast and back. The Johnson got kicked out of the case after I got a Kentucky KM-150 at Christmas. Both mandolins fit snugly in the case. I just bought a Musician's Gear dreadnought case from Musician's Friend for my Fender concert guitar. It's a little too big, but for the price, I'll add some padding. Both cases offer better protection than the best gig bag IMHO.

I have the MF hard shell from about a year ago. Only difference with the one linked is the buckles are flipped 180 deg from the photo. Dimensions are exactly as stated. It is not a marvel of workmanship or design, but is a sturdy case with a good fit for my Kentucky 550. I reglued the black material (Tolex?) in a small area where it started peeling recently.
Now if I could find a modern case for my Martin style B that worked without lots of padding...

Every now and again that comes up. Nobody has had a really good answer to that one yet.

The Musician's Gear Hardshell A-Style Mandolin Case is a good one! Thanks! I must have bought it on sale, because now the price is $46. When I bought it last week, it was $30. It is a good, but not quite snug fit for my A5 JBovier that I just bought, or my Eastman MD-505. Seems sturdy enough and the buckles are aligned and work properly.


The Musician's Gear Durafoam Shaped A-Style Mandolin Case is huge! I'm not sure what A style they designed it for, but my mandolin was swimming in it. If it were the right size for the mandolin to fit more snugly, it seems like it would be a great case, but it is way too big.
