Kent armstrong makes a thin pickup for jazz that attaches to the pickguard. It is thin enough to go under the strings of a mandolin near the fingerboard and sounds very nice. I have put a few on mandolins and some actually sound fairly acoustic if that is possible. You can get fairly loud without feedback as it is a magnetic pickup. I was able to use regular strings and not electric strings and have a decent sound. GHS is making the pure nickel and that would work for a magnetic pickup. These are low impedance like 6-7k so fairly clean sounding, well they are meant for jazz so. Anyway that is another option.
