A bit of salmon from my brother. My old family is gone, except my son, who is here, but had nothing. My elderly parents and I have an arrangement of not doing the gift thing. They're into their divestment period. My wife is up doing her family things, and will have something. It's a delight to see my parents and brother, who all live a ways off. My sister called from Wales. I've only seen her a few times, since she appeared on the scene a few years ago Surprise relative. So there's deep forever heartache and delight in old and new relationships that remain.

But there was a trip for shrimp and a 1/2 bushel of Chesapeake oysters, back on the scene. I made an ettoufee, no idea how to spell, and shucked many oysters. Brother did an oyster stew. Steaks. Today a wonderful turkey and some decent Scotch.

And the dog is here still, grizzled and a steady companion as always.

As I find pieces of Christmas old, I give them to my ex. I have the memories.

I have unearthed my piano, and old Christmas favorites sprang forth easily. It is enough.

I got the brand new "Complete Guide to Gibson Mandolins" by Paul Fox. Haven't gotten very far into it yet, but I'm ready to read about my 1906 F2 next time I pick it up.

No tree, but my gift today was time. Time to spend with my wife and our cats, time out on the farm in the fresh air watching the sheep and the ponies while hawks soared overhead in the sunshine, time with friends for good conversation, and time to make music this evening on my piano and my mandolin. Really, what more could I possibly want? I am content.

I got a reprint of Mickey Baker's Complete Course in Jazz Guitar Book 1, first published in 1955, and an original copy in great condition of Mel Bay Presents The Merle Travis Guitar Style from 1974. Both of these guitar giants used some unusual chording that I'm eager to get into my fingers!

I got an "Alexa" echo dot thingy. Its like "Seri" for your home. You activate it by saying its name and then ask it a question ("whats the weather today" or give it a command "play me some bluegrass music").

Only problem is, I can't ever remember its name to turn it on.
