Thread: Another newbie with a new mandolin

Default Another newbie with a new mandolin

Excited to be here. Started playing guitar April 2013 and loving it. Have some Taylors, a Collings OM, and a Jake Robinson sloped shouldered dread. Just love playing and the music community.

My Christmas request to my wife was a good entry level mandolin as I started flatpicking about 6 months ago and it just seems natural that if you enjoy roots and bluegrass music, you should explore the mandolin. She got me an Eastman MD-505 from The Mandolin Store that I can't touch until Christmas morning.

I'm already on Peghead Nation so I'll be exploring Sharon Gilchrist's beginning mandolin course there and I purchased Marcy Marxer's Mandolin for Guitar Players from Truefire. I like the course format and her teaching style and demeanor work well. Ms. Gilchrist's course looks interesting also as her teaching style is to teach by ear so that should be very fun (I hope!).

Look forward to learning a lot here (and probably asking a lot of questions that have been answered many times before!).

Welcome to the Cafe, Bob, and welcome to mandolin playing! I have an Eastman MD 505 that I bought back in March of this year from the Mandolin Store. I really like the sound, and The Mandolin Store did a great job in setting up my mandolin.

Have fun, and no sneaking before Christmas!

Welcome, Bob. There are quite a few Eastman pickers here as well as recovering guitarists. Check out the Newbies social group (click the "Listen/Learn" dropdown near the top of the page, click "Social Groups", then find "Newbies" and click it). You'll have good guitar pickin Eastman mandoliner company there. And then there is me too.

Those sound like good resources (I've learned mostly from books by Julin, Eschliman, Greg Horne and Rubner-Petersen, but also the Sam Bush, Bill Monroe, Ronnie McCoury and Thile DVD's and a couple months of lessons til my teacher joined a touring band)

Sharon Gilchrist's beginning mandolin course is a great place to start, and what little bit I have heard about Marcy Marxer's Mandolin for Guitar Players I really like it. I would love to hear what you think of it.

My wait is tougher. Getting an Eastman 515, but we'll be out of town until the 29th. Am not gonna fly with a brand new mandolin.

Welcome--still kind of feel like a newcomer to Mandolin myself (under 2 years)
Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?

Can't go wrong with an Eastman set up by one of our sponsors. Great first mandolin choice.

Now, part of the deal here, you need to start thinking about your next mandolin. No matter you haven't started yet, that's just what we do.

I try to think at least two mandolins out, I try to catch and not release.
