Growing up in Canada I was exposed to a lot of Glenn Gould. It was only in my 20's that I realized how out of the ordinary Gould's approach was. I do hear that creative spirit in Thile's approach, and I am really appreciating the many facets to Thile's approach to his instrument. He is the Wynton Marsalis of his generation and we have a front row seat.

For those of us who have ever been frustrated about the differences in expression between violin and mandolin, Thile has some encouraging words early in that video. And it can apply to more than just Classical music.

Is there supposed to be a link?

I don't see a link, nor a video posted in the OM.

THere is a link there. Not sure why you can't see it. I'll repost the URL here but not embed it.

This is amazing, by the way.

I was at his performance at the Bomhard Theater in Louisville. Bachtoberfest! Amazing show!

I think the embedding has an adobe flash issue... The link works!

    That was great.

Side note: Anyone else think Thile and the interviewer look like they could be brothers?

Not really.bastian seems a bit upper crust.while thile is more ..well the other side of the tracks.
I think Chris is a genius and i can certainly see
Why he would be attracted to Bach.who was also a genius musically.if you are ever enthralled by where a musicians mind goes while he is playing
Than this is why Chris loves bach.and it is why i enjoy listening to Thile so much.thanks for posting.

I think the interviewer looks a little like Neil Patrick Harris.

I like that Chris has really really thought about it, and has some very very useful things to say.

I have seen interviews with many brilliant musicians, classical and otherwise, and so often the person has nothing original to say, or in many cases is not really all that good a talker or is too nervous. I was even thinking that excelling in musical expression perhaps their verbal expression skills were atrophied or lacking all together. Chris is a delightful exception in my experience.

    And he is wicked smart.

Thile transforms into a mandolin as soon as his pick strikes the strings. I think the mandolin is playing him.

Yeah, add some tremolo and it puts you right on the gondola.

Shortly before he died, Duane Allman said he was starting to " think like a guitar" Thile thinks like a mandolin.
