Thread: Loop end e string unraveling

Default Loop end e string unraveling

So, i have an issue. Ive been trying diffrent setups on my cheap mandolin with round posts on the tail piece. I put strings on and it works fine.. if i loosen them when i get them back up to tune the e string, always the 2nd one up, comes unraveled. I did try soldering one string and it held for about 5 minutes then pow. I had seen someone mention filing the post to be oval, would that help? Can i do anything to help this? Does this happen to other people? Maybe just file the sides and back of the post a little? And stop loosing up my strings...
It happens with martin light gauge and d'addario j74s

Every time you loosen a string it weakens it. I don't mean like tune down a step, but loosen. Sounds like you have a sharp spot tho.

Actual unraveling of the loop's windings back around the string's shaft would be a true oddity, at least within the last 5 or 6 decades. If you mean breaking the loop, as pops1 assumed, it could well be due to a sharp spot on that string's "seemingly" round post.

But a question: Why are you loosening the strings in the first place, other than for minor tuning adjustments?

You describe the situation the 12 hook Gibson tail pieces were made to fix..

NuTone A & E strings are looped less securely than D'Addario and GHS..

Whammy bars have had Guitar strings soldered where they are wound to hold the Ball ..

what solder and Flux did you use?

I used electrical soldier..after it unwound i rewound it then soldered.
Ive been trying to get the action lower, swapped nuts and bridge. So ive had to loosen them a few times, then had to put new ones on then redo the bridge...then put new ones on again..

next time, for a better bond, with steel, use acid core solder and an acid flux...

cleanliness and oil free, including that from your hands, matters..

I have an unraveled E on my oldest fiddle right now. I twisted in a new loop with needle-nose pliers and a vise. Been holding now for about three years. You really can't solder steel. You might try slipping some heat shrink over it, then twist it up, slide the heat shrink over the twisted part and heat.

Yes, with the Martin E strings it has happened several times. No down tuning for me!

I had that happen with Martin strings as well, on both E strings when first put on.
