Thread: Duncan Phillips & The Long Stand

Default Duncan Phillips & The Long Stand

New, debut album from Duncan Phillips, an exiled Shetlander living in Melbourne, Australia, is excellent, and has some mandolin content played by Duncan himself.

Phillips occupies the long-established singer-songwriter genre in the modern Americana mould, with echoes of Dylan, Steve Earle and early John Mellencamp in his delivery. All-original songs are of consistently high quality, and production values are top notch. Well worth a listen here.

Minor trivia point: 'The Long Stand' is named for pranks traditionally pulled on the new kid in the British factory, who would be sent to the storeroom to ask for 'a long stand' - and be left standing there until the penny finally dropped. I wonder if subsequent bands might be named The Left-Handed Screwdriver or The Bucket of Steam

Or, as in my own case, working in an aircraft factory, a length of ''wing chord line''. As a 15 year old office boy not yet familiar with anything to do with aircraft,i was sent to the general stores for a 10 ft length of it. I was given permission to look through the store for the bin containing it. As there were well over 5,000 of them,it took a while !,
