Default Angus R Grant of Shooglenifty, RIP

Really sad news today of the sudden passing of one of Scotland's finest fiddlers and inspirations. Angus, you will be greatly missed by thousands.

Indeed he will. A great loss to the music world, Kevin.

Terrible news. I remember seeing Angus as a teenager with a great young Lochaber band called Pennycroft, and I last saw him in June when he sat in with a band I play with at the Independence festivities on the Isle Of Eigg. I always found him to be a really nice, very modest guy who I liked a lot.

I feel greatly saddened for his family, especially his dad old Angus who I know well, and to Shooglenifty who I will always think are a wonderful band.

    Any word of a funeral?

Wonderful player, and an inspiration to not just the band, but to all those who wanted to try to break the mould of the same old traditional stuff.

    Not sure.

I had planned to sell lambs in Dingwall. I haven't been able to get to the Tuesday fat lamb sales as I have been doing Youth Music Initiative work in primary schools for the last six Tuesdays and this is a good time (October school holidays) to get the lambs away.

But maybe. I suppose I could drop some lambs off with the pickup and carry on to Ft William.
I might smell a bit sheepy but old Angus might quite like that. We used to spend breakfasts in Ft Augustus talking about sheep, with great tales of shepherds before any of the rest of the crew would appear.

Not a time to be joking, though. It will be a really sad day.

This was a memorable eulogy by James MacIntosh. So heartfelt and, at moments, very funny. Well worth a read.

I agree. James's eulogy was really excellent. I have since read it over a couple of times.

Sorry we didn't get a bit longer, Kevin. I didn't go back to Glenfinnan, and I don't suppose you did either.

I was also immensely sad to hear this news at the time, a significant loss to music.
I found this on you tube and thought it was interesting...a very young Angus and Ian. Nice!

So we celebrated the life of Angus Grant at a huge Shooglenifty party gigat Celtic Connections, which was utterly brilliant. So happy to be there performing with these amazing musicians, all of whom adored the wizard.

I was at CC last night, mainly to see the South African guitarist Derek Gripper who was outstanding.
I also caught sets by Sarah Jarolz Trio, Laura Cortese and various others.

Sarah played mandolin in only about two numbers, but it did sound very good. Mostly she sang, playing octave, 5 string banjo and guitar. She had Anthony De Costa on guitars and vocals and Jeff Picker on double bass. She drew a full house at the City Halls.

Yes, think that's right. It sounded a lot better out front it seems than on stage!

The sound was really good - particularly impressive in that there were multiple artists being whisked on and off stage all through the concert. You guys held your own (apart from in volume - think La Banda des Crechas won that one!)

I was at Sarah's concert and really enjoyed it, Dagger. She is a really fine musician as were her two colleagues. Anthony had some fascinating sounds out of the electric guitar on those numbers where he played it rather than the acoustic.

    Hi John,

Yes I was checking out Anthony Da Costa. I think electric guitar is probably his main interest.
Sarah was indeed very good, but after the intensity of Derek Gripper's set which I had just seen I was probably not quite in the right frame of mind for it. I like her overall manner and general approach a lot, though.

Incidentally, Gripper was supporting Tommy Emmanuel at the Concert Hall last night. That's a pretty serious guitar night ...
