I heard this delightful piece on Jayne and Wayne Henderson on the way home from work yesterday. I thought some of you may also be interested.
I love that he's passing his skills on to the next generation of builders.

Thanks for the link. None of my business, but a 4-year waiting list on her instruments!
For the life of me I don't understand why any luthier would want to deal with that kind of pressure from customers calling all the time asking if their instrument's been started, completed, where's my deposit? ...and the likes. I'm sure her Dad is well familiar with that phenomena, as I've heard stories about people waiting years for their piece. That's proven to be a tough business model regardless of whether you're building guitars or anything else.
Build 'em the way you like and when you like, and then sell them. Obviously there's enough demand for the Henderson name. Each to their own I guess.
I also heard it on NPR yesterday while I was driving around. A 4-year waiting list sounds like job security to me! I agree it takes a certain personality to deal with the potential of nagging phone calls in a cheerful manner.
I was astonished that with just a few instruments under her belt she has such a reputation and commands such a deep wait list. However, I suppose the proof is in the instruments and she does have a very capable mentor ensuring quality. I don't begrudge her a customer!

That was a very nice interview and I agree with Jamie that it is cool that Wayne is passing along his skills and knowledge. I also thought his daughter's enthusiasm was neat.
I caught the tail end of the story and it was a good one. It's great to see more women luthiers out there. While I don't think a Henderson instrument will be in my cards but super excited to see Jayne taking up the mantel.
Nice article, but it looks like she is building ukulele's from the photo's.
