Thread: D'Addario EJ73 light gauge on Martin A mandolin?

Default D'Addario EJ73 light gauge on Martin A mandolin?

This has probably been talked to death on the forum, but I'm danged if I can find a definitive thread, so I thought I'd post a new one:

I've had a 1950 spruce-topped Martin A mandolin for many years, but only recently brought it out and restrung it. Since I've heard the Martin mando's aren't designed for heavier-gauge strings, I bought a set of D'Addario EJ73's and put them on the Martin.

I have to say the strings make the Martin sound great and I'm developing a new appreciation for the instrument. However, I want to be certain that the EJ73's won't damage it. I understand that the Martin strings are even lighter than the D'Addario "light set", but I do like the tone, projection, and tuning stability of the EJ73's.

Just curious to hear any comments or personal experiences.

    Thanks, all.

The D'Addario set would probably add about 1.8kg extra tension over the Martin light set. As a former Martin A player I would have thought that would present little problem but perhaps others with experience of using the Martin A/EJ73 setup may chime in.

    Billy,
I've been running Elixir lights on my Martin B with good results, but am curious about what other options there are that won't create structural problems..
according to the all knowing internet, Elixirs would have a total tension of 144lb
    http://www.elixirstrings.com/guitar-...n-strings.html
The EJ73's would have a total tension of 155.78 lb
    http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDe...7-ea01ec0cc847
The Martins are the same gauge as the Elixirs, and have a similar listed tension: 146.8 lb
    https://www.martinguitar.com/strings/mandolin/

I don't know if these numbers are over the same "standard" scale length..and the shorter scale length of the Martin Mando would mean slightly lower tension than the "standard" scale length as well.

I am no expert, but I don't think the EJ73's would be a problem, any medium sets might be an issue with tensions in the 180 lb + range.

What other light sets are there for Martins that are well liked? As my playing improves, I am digging the sound of my Martin too!
